Does a holiday home need a washing machine?

I’m fortunate to have inherited a tiny flat in an increasingly popular holiday place. Short/medium plan is to use it myself and then holidayboetnit when I’m not there.

Just looking at works that need to be done - does anyone have a view on whether a holiday let MUST have a washing machine? It’s the kind of place most people will come for the weekend - a week at most.

Im reconfiguring it from a studio with separate kitchen to a separate bedroom with kitchen/living together. It’s is teeenny! And wouLd be a real stretch to get washing machine in the new configuration!

thank you

If for a family, then absolutely yes. But if it’s just for couples I think you’d get away without one, although it could reduce your market. Are there any launderettes locally?

themimi · 04/09/2022 08:38

I think yes if it's near a beach and/or the kind of place a family would stay at

DowntonCrabby · 04/09/2022 08:38

I’d rather have a washing machine in a self catering property than a dishwasher.

quiteathome · 04/09/2022 08:39

Yes for a family sized home. (I like to have one self catering, but we go as a family for a week of so.)

Probably not for what you have described. Especially if it is mainly going to be couples for short breaks.

JamMakingWannaBe · 04/09/2022 08:40

For a week, yes.
For a long weekend, no.

WimpoleHat · 04/09/2022 08:40

Yes. Only reason if book a holiday let rather than a hotel, to be honest.

Teenyliving · 04/09/2022 08:40

No space for a dishwasher at all!

not a family space at all. Very much couple coming down from London type place.

thanks for comments - I think will be fine given the likely clientele 😁

Not necessary for me at all but I don't book anywhere without a dishwasher.

RandomUsernameHere · 04/09/2022 08:41

No I don't think it needs one, we've been away loads of times with young kids (sometimes for 2 weeks) without access to a washing machine. I would probably make it clear in the particulars though, as people may assume there is one.

Teenyliving · 04/09/2022 08:41

its in the middle of town with restaurants so I think kostnpeole won’t full on cook there

I wouldn't book anywhere without a dishwasher. There are enough flats and houses with them for me to immediately discount any without.
I much prefer a place to have a washing machine and it's essential if I'm going away with the kids for a week, but can cope for a long weekend without.

ZenNudist · 04/09/2022 08:43

No need. I wouldn't expect it in something so small.

Ideally yes where there is space but otherwise no.

Touga · 04/09/2022 08:43

Yes. I only ever book holiday let's with washing machines so I don't have to pack as much stuff and don't have to worry about spending a whole day dealing with piles of laundry when I get home

Denny53 · 04/09/2022 08:47

For a couple- no. Only really necessary if for a family

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 04/09/2022 08:48

I'm currently at a holiday home now in IoW with two under 10s. Was surprised to see a washing machine but, for the size of the place and the cost to stay here, I guess it makes sense. I always pack to have enough without needing to wash. I think you will be fine without if budget reflects, targeting four nights or less and not for large families.

Teenyliving · 04/09/2022 08:50

Thanks all. I think might turn a few people off but mostly should be okay.

the only way I can work out to fit one is to basically put it under the stairs in the communal hallway. I won the freehold so it a problem but I imagine it wiukd
be expensive to make that happen.

okay fab - one decision already made this Sunday 😃

RaininSummer · 04/09/2022 08:59

I have never used a washing machine in a holiday let and don't have a dishwasher at home so wouldn't expect one. Wouldn't know how to use it either.

jamaisjedors · 04/09/2022 09:02

How will you wash the sheets and towels yourself between lets ?

If you have other options then no, I wouldn't expect or need one in a small weekend flat I was renting.

MissMarpleRocks · 04/09/2022 09:03

Would not book anywhere without dishwasher or washing machine. That is what hotels are for. Even if I was eating out.

Glasses, cups breakfast stuff still need washing up. We do self catering a lot & I think both are required tbh.

Need to make it clear you don’t have them & make sure reflected in the price.

ThisIsNotAFlyingToy · 04/09/2022 09:04

I filter out if no washing machine if going for a week. But I might not in this country for outside of summer. Depends what your target audience is.

Craftybodger · 04/09/2022 09:06

In a studio I don’t think a washing machine is essential but a dishwasher is!

justasking111 · 04/09/2022 09:06

How are you going to dry the washing, it's a flat with the price of energy there won't be a tumble dryer

Thighdentitycrisis · 04/09/2022 09:08

I think it would be ok for weekends without one. I usually travel very light and if I was staying for a week would probably like to wash a few things by hand.

I would make it clear in the listing and leave a basin with hand washing liquid and Can you squeeze in a small drying rack /or area in the bathroom or balcony?

Sunsnowsun · 04/09/2022 09:08

I don’t think it needs one for guests, but if you are going to use it as a holiday let you will need to ensure that you have someone/management company that takes away linens to wash etc. It also means that if you are going to end up always taking bed linen and towels home to wash. If you own the freehold think about putting a washing machine under stairs in a locked cupboard longer term.
