Does a holiday home need a washing machine?

I’m fortunate to have inherited a tiny flat in an increasingly popular holiday place. Short/medium plan is to use it myself and then holidayboetnit when I’m not there.

Just looking at works that need to be done - does anyone have a view on whether a holiday let MUST have a washing machine? It’s the kind of place most people will come for the weekend - a week at most.

Im reconfiguring it from a studio with separate kitchen to a separate bedroom with kitchen/living together. It’s is teeenny! And wouLd be a real stretch to get washing machine in the new configuration!

thank you

Aargh, fat fingers and hit post too soon. But you get the gist.

calmlakes · 04/09/2022 13:54

I don't think a small couples flat needs a washing machine.
I would put in a slimline or table top dishwasher.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/09/2022 15:54

"If there’s no dishwasher, I’d emphasise the kitchen as a handy place for preparing breakfast or simple meals/snacks, rather than as a fully functional kitchen for fancy catering."

No. I totally disagree. Many, many people living in flats don't have dishwashers and wouldn't necessarily expect one on a holiday for one or two people. That hardly makes the kitchen 'not fully functioning'.

I agree.

I forgot that my studio flat holiday accommodation had a dishwasher! I had so little stuff that I automatically just washed it up. Decades of holidaying in mobile homes made it an automatic response for me! It was only when cleaning on the last morning that I remembered!

Roselilly36 · 04/09/2022 16:39

For a U.K. break I would much rather have a d/w rather than a washing machine.

Scrappydoo668 · 04/09/2022 22:34

I sometimes filter my Airbnb searches for things like washing machine. Especially if I’m going to be staying for a week.

It’s not a deal breaker, but it’s really handy!

The solution is easy. Just buy the next flat over, knock through, redo the entire kitchen and add a utility room complete with a separate washer and dryer and dishwasher so MN families can stay there.

An excellent point. Although...I'm assuming there is also off street parking for three cars...?

BustPipes · 04/09/2022 22:55

Anyway, me and DP (couple, no kids) went somewhere without a dishwasher for a week, and it was like that scene from Withnail and I. Have religiously checked the specs ever since.

This. I've only ever lived in one place with a dishwasher and barely used it. Wouldn't cross my mind to want or need one in a rental where we're likely only making the odd coffee or sandwich anyway (given that we are OP's short break couple audience who'd be eating out primarily).

jamaisjedors · 04/09/2022 09:02

How will you wash the sheets and towels yourself between lets ?

If you have other options then no, I wouldn't expect or need one in a small weekend flat I was renting.

Holiday let owners don't wash and dry the linen between let's- they have at least two full sets so always gave a fresh set to use on arrivals day.

Dinoteeth · 04/09/2022 22:57

I'd definitely think if someone is looking for a flat they are planning on eating in or they'd go for a hotel.

I'd try and fit a slim dishwasher and a washer dryer.

avamiah · 04/09/2022 23:07

It’s not a “Holiday Home” without a washing machine and preferably a washer dryer.

Lets be honest here if you want families to stay then you must have a washing machine especially if your looking for 5 night or more stays.

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 04/09/2022 23:13

If you want to appeal to the couples with 1baby under 1 who has just started sleeping enough that they feel they can enjoy life again and want a holiday - then it's vital. But if you are expecting strictly couples only no kids then fine not to.

RampantIvy · 04/09/2022 23:15

It's not a holiday if I am having to do some washing.

Lets be honest here if you want families to stay

She doesn't. It's a tiny 1 bed apartment for short breaks. If someone doesn't have enough clothes for 3 or 4 days or even a week without needing to do some washing can they really afford to go away?

Ormally · 04/09/2022 23:18

If it's self-catering I am looking for, not a hotel, then there are usually reasons I might need a reasonable kitchen to do an evening meal, and a washing machine. Depends on what is around the area, but family members cycling or doing outdoor things that will involve getting muddy is a regular reason to want the option of washing clothes during the stay.

NotanotherboxofFrogs · 04/09/2022 23:33

I haven't read the full thread but I am answering from my own perspective.

Washing machine is a must for me and a dryer. dishwasher could be managed without.

Due to incontinence, I use Kylie sheets on the bed to try and protect the bed, sometimes it is successful but sometimes it is not but can save having to change the bed from scratch..

So using 2-3 of Kylie sheets on the bed which can hold up to 2-3 litres each which needs to be washed and dried. If no washer or dryer this can build up very fast.

So with no access to machines for a week is a definite no-no from me. The amount of stuff to pack would be absolutely massive as i often need changes of clothes during the day too and the amount of soiled/wet clothing that would build up would be ridiculous. So a definite no no.

RampantIvy · 04/09/2022 23:37

That sounds difficult @NotanotherboxofFrogs. Unfortunately, in the OP's case there is nowhere to dry the washing.

Most holiday cottages I've been to have a washer drier.

TwoMonthsOff · 04/09/2022 23:43

Is there anywhere to dry the clothes from the washing machine ? If it was installed
i have never washed clothes on holiday personally so I’d say no it’s not needed
(apart from rinsing swimwear out of course )

Tralalalalalalalalalala · 04/09/2022 23:53

No! It's a tiny flat. No-one is going to stay long term so we can all manage a week without putting a washing load on surely. Handwash underwear, that is all that is needed. Other issue is where to dry. Remember you are in a flat so no outside drying.

Cheeselog · 05/09/2022 00:04

If you’re not planning to let it out for longer stretches then I think it’s fine. I’ve literally never done laundry whilst staying at a holiday let.

avamiah · 05/09/2022 00:13

@RampantIvy ,

I apologise, as I had only skimmed through the Original Post and obviously only half skimmed through it at the very least .

Thats what I get for thinking I know it all because I’ve been on MN for many years.

I made a mistake .

Haha did you go to a tearoom and ask them for a bottle of “fine wine” 😂

Op doesn’t want families to stay. She said it’s a tiny flat that used to be a studio but is now a 1 bed
