Does a holiday home need a washing machine?

I’m fortunate to have inherited a tiny flat in an increasingly popular holiday place. Short/medium plan is to use it myself and then holidayboetnit when I’m not there.

Just looking at works that need to be done - does anyone have a view on whether a holiday let MUST have a washing machine? It’s the kind of place most people will come for the weekend - a week at most.

Im reconfiguring it from a studio with separate kitchen to a separate bedroom with kitchen/living together. It’s is teeenny! And wouLd be a real stretch to get washing machine in the new configuration!

thank you

No Washing machine is ok. But maybe squeeze one in the hallway for your use if you want to wash bedding/ towels yourself between private stays to save external laundry fees.

Dishwasher 100% add. Many hotel studio suites now have them. You can buy a dishwasher drawer so you have another drawer underneath or above for storage of kitchen things. The main reason is that ‘some’ people are just rubbish at washing up, no soap or don’t rinse, so cleaner will have to re clean. Easier if guests and cleaner can just load any cups, cutlery, breakfast stuff into machine. Even if they eat lunch and dinner out.

Dishwasher drawer under sink like this

I have a couples holiday home.

I put in a washing machine and it gets used maybe 5 times a year. I regret it as the space could have been better used.

The dishwasher is used 95% of the time. Handwashed stuff always has to be washed again, especially mugs. Also on changeover day I pit loads in there- coffee machine tray, fridge shelves etc and run a quick wash. It saves loads of time.

Teenyliving · 05/09/2022 07:54

@Caspianberg oh I’m loving that dishwasher drawer!

@Movinghouseatlast oh thsts helpful insight thank you

def going to try to squeeze in a dishwasher drawer.

anyone have a view in mmm on whether I need a full oven or whether one of those microwaves thst can also be an oven would be enough?

I’ve moved on to my next space dilemma 😂

I think you could get a microwave oven.
You just need something someone can cook tray of something, warm ready meal, pizza, bread rolls.

ikea do very good two ring induction hobs that are fitted like a regular job but space saving for work surface

We have holiday let. People don’t wash up well so we have dishwasher, and only tiny side drainer next to sink to encourage people not to hand wash.

Only add enough plates/ cups for x2 per person. So 4 of each in your case. That way saves storage space and everything will fit into dishwasher drawer to re wash during clean if needed in one load.

add divan beds. Where mattress lifts up with storage underneath. We keep new pillows, winter extra blankets, travel cot, and everything underneath that guests don’t need access to day to day.

You can get table top dishwashers.

If there is no room for a washer I would appreciate instructions to a local laundry .

You could also supply a 'camping' washing machine - they store away easily.

Agree with the combi option of grill, microwave etc. Good on power usage, cleaning is easier (most of the time) and can do everything if there are only 2 of you. I don't have the model above, but many can get hot on the exterior though, so be careful with the flex not being put in danger of melting, and with plenty of space around so nothing else can get warm.

TwoMonthsOff · 05/09/2022 17:36

@Teenyliving
it is brilliant, I’m on my third one in fifteen years I will never use my ‘big’ oven again, I have cooked cakes in them, I just bought a couple of small round baking trays for them as I wanted to keep the supplied one clean.
I’ve got a separate microwave so I don’t use the microwave function much but I have done a Few times it’s very powerful. The grill is fantastic too, it has threee levels and it cooks pizza to perfection. I’d recommend the turntable version though as my second one didn’t have that but they are all fan assisted. The model I showed you is 20% narrower for worktops too. They also do it In white . I wouldn’t be without mine and it’s so easy to keep clean and goes up to 240 degrees I’ve read you can roast chickens in them though I’ve not done that, it comes with a stacking tray as well but you can buy a lower one. I’ve got both

TwoMonthsOff · 05/09/2022 17:40

@Ormally
i warm my dishes on the top and keep my salt on it, they do get hot but not enough to cause a burn I’d say….you just need to keep the recommended distance from the wall I guess… I absolutely love mine and I’d always get Panasonic as they’ve been so reliable though the Samsung one i was looking at in curry’s looks lovely too.

TwoMonthsOff · 05/09/2022 17:42

Sorry 220 degrees but I’ve never needed to have it that hot - it’s normally 180 is hot enough as the capacity is small it gets hot quickly ….I fancy pizza now 🐷

Teenyliving · 05/09/2022 17:44

Oh that’s so interesting- I’m just looking at ovens but maybe I can just get this instead - which would free up a lovely bit of space for a dishwasher drawer 😁

@Teenyliving
for a compact apartment I don’t see the point of taking up space with a huge oven …these are perfect
Here’s a YouTube video of it

Ormally · 05/09/2022 17:53

Thanks! Yes, it does an incredible job on pizza! With it plugging in, I am sure it must be a real saving on power compared to almost all ovens.

Even if people are only booking your place for 2/3 nights, it doesn't mean they're only away for 2/3 nights. And you might still want to wash, even if you don't have kids!
When we go on holiday for 2 weeks, we usually stay in 4 different places, and a mix of hotels and SC. I want the SC places to have a washing machine - I've got walking stuff (plus running stuff if I've been keen), and tops that I want to bung through a wash (as well as underwear/PJs). I am NOT one of these 'one wear one wash' people - far from it. But 2 weeks on an active holiday means plenty of potential laundry. I'd rather travel light and wash than lug a whole load of clothes with me.

We booked a tiny flat in Pitlochry for 3 nights last Sept, having been in hotels for the preceding week. I didn't check the details closely enough and was cross with myself when I got there are there was no WM.

So don't presume couples/short lets definitely means no washing wanted!

RampantIvy · 05/09/2022 18:36

But if they know that there is no washing machine they will pack accordingly. Back in the day people packed for a two week holiday where there were no washing machines. We all survived.

This is such a first world problem.

DuesToTheDirt · 05/09/2022 19:47

"Back in the day people packed for a two week holiday where there were no washing machines."

Back in the day there were laundrettes around if you really needed to do a wash. These are getting quite rare.

Jellykat · 05/09/2022 20:10

I manage a holiday let, and clean another, both one bedroom properties without a washing machine.. no guests have ever commented on the lack of! - both properties are rated really highly with great reviews..

Plus in your case, if its a flat, how do they dry the clothes after washing??

Teenyliving · 05/09/2022 20:35

I’ve just reread all my posts. And I would like to thank everyone on this thread for not mentioning my APPALLING numerous typos.

lasted update is: no washing machine, no oven, microwave/oven combi and drawer dishwasher 😁

and whoever mentioned the divan bed for storage - INSPIRED

mathanxiety · 05/09/2022 20:37

I'd put in a dishwasher but not a washing machine.

Or just not book it if there's no washing machine.

I don't have enough walking gear to have enough for every day, so I make sure I can wash it. Plus I want to travel light if I'm packing/unpacking 4 times. I'm not faffing around with hand washing on holiday.

Ellmau · 05/09/2022 22:23

Is there anywhere to dry the clothes from the washing machine ?

This is key, I think. I've stayed in a cottage with a washing machine but no airing cupboard or place to hang things to dry, which we didn't realise until after doing a wash... Ended up having things over radiators and an unused bed and on tables which was not ideal.
