We are looking at buying a house close to the A1(M) The back garden is 200 meters from the motorway and although there are gardens in between the road noise is very noticeable. Every time we have been to view a been different I guess because of the weather

I am wondering if it's something you could get used to ... the house is lovely but I don't want to regrets a big decision ... advise please

I do think the sunk cost fallacy applies to some of these responses. Where someone has invested so much money into a house they won't admit there's an issue.

I used to live near Heathrow and openly admit the aircraft noise was dreadful. My neighbours said they barely noticed. Only difference is I rented and they'd paid to buy their houses.

Don't do it.

Thank you everyone you have helped me so much and bought up all sorts of things I hadn't considered
We have decided not to go for it and so the hunt continues for our dream home x

Sounds like that particular "dream" home could have turned into a nightmare. Good luck with your search OP.

Hi I know it’s an old thread but came across it and just had to respond because it makes me laugh a lot of the comments I have read. I live about 25m away from a motorway now it is noisy in the garden but you know what it’s not annoying one bit because it’s not revs and exhausts and sirens you hear. Then the ones banging on about air pollution almighty the hypocrisy, bet they’re driving a Range Rover, don’t recycle, waste loads of food, stuff their faces with processed rubbish, you catch my drift… I had a professional survey done on the outdoor and indoor pollution and it was safe and that’s because there are lovely trees around the whole garden which offset the pollution, no black soot on windows ever either, inside the house cannot hear anything whatsoever, even at night when no tv on etc. maybe I have got used to it but honestly no sound that shocks me and wakes me up like it used to when I lived on a side street at my parents by idiot drivers. So yeah don’t let other people tell you otherwise, go with your gut and live your life how you want to, if you’ll enjoy where you live some white noise will not bother you. Rather listen to the motorway than a couple or kids having domestics! Also no one overlooking so it’s private too as national highway has put these great fences up so can’t see the motorway and nobody can see in too and because of all the greenery too and big trees! Hope that helps thank you

Good decision not to. We did it on an a road, terrible decision as we got so much more for our money, it was sheer greed that back fired.

couldnt open the windows in summer as the noise was horrendous, the curtains and patio all became really dirty due to pollution really quickly ,and the sound of emergency vehicles etc was disturbing.

id try to avoid it where ever possible, and our next house, this one, is far away from a road and up a long private drive, we wouldn’t even view houses on a a or b road.
