CHAPS payment for completion

Hi all, I need to make a payment via CHAPS for completion. I have been making deposits into the solicitors account, on a daily basis, but due to the final amount being more than my daily transfer limit, I need to use CHAPS. Am using the solicitors details from a hard copy letter (and funds have been received at the other end). I am taking some ID along with me also to make the CHAPS. I have two questions: 1. Do I need to make an appt at the bank to make the CHAPS? I have tried to call and there is a long wait time and 2. Can I check the info being input onto the screen (bank account and sort code, for funds to be sent)?
I am feeling nervous as I haven't done this before and am aware of cyber fraud etc.

Did it earlier this year.

No appointment necessary at the Halifax but it did take a while (30-mins+) and yes, you get to check all the details are correct (they check & double check).
There was a fee as the sum to be paid was over the threshold, think it was £20.

Did it last year at Nationwide. No appointment needed and they printed a copy of all the details for me to sign before they pressed send on the funds. Paid about £30 fee I think?

Thanks all. Yes, aware there is a charge. Glad to hear they are checking and double checking! I have been transferring funds via online banking, so I know the account details are all correct and will take solicitors hard copy letter with me to be sure.

It depends on your bank but with some you can make the CHAPS payment online

JasmineIndigo · 30/08/2022 19:56

We requested ours online so didn't need to physically go into the bank.

I Made my CHAPS payment online, but you can go into the bank also

mindutopia · 30/08/2022 20:26

We did ours on the phone and yes, it took 30 minutes, but then it was done and no issue.

In this forum there is a thread from me at the start of thins month about a Barclays CHAPS payment I arranged online and the nightmare it was on completion day (I was eventually rescued by Nationwide) - I would now advise anyone to go into the bank - online is actually slower and less reliable if you can believe it! I thought it was the same service but have learned since that it isn't

I’d do it in branch. I had to do one last month for a property completion. I did it online and the bank lost the request. The payment wasn’t made and I’ve never been so stressed.

Thanks all. Planning on going into the bank today, sitting in the office with all the paperwork (ID) etc.

Yes, I made sure the solicitor confirmed before she finished for the day that they had received the money ok.
Seemed a very long 3-hours!

She has just confirmed receipt. So relieved!
