Design ideas for home office / storage in bedroom

I want to sort out our bedroom storage as since we moved it's been the last room to do. We are in a rental at the moment, with a young child and TTC. It's a small 2bed two-up-two-down terrace, so space is at a premium!! (The area and schools are great hence the move, and we are sticking here for the foreseeable so we have to make it work).

Anyway DH and I alternate WFH days and the only place for our desk is in our already small bedroom. We have no room for bedside tables, and the room is overflowing with stuff.

The area we use to work is along one wall - the shortest edge, which is probably 2.5m as it's the length of our bed plus a bit extra. Along that wall we need desk space, shelves storage for a lot of files, plus storage for other things like cabin bag and other bits, plus a chest of drawers as there is nowhere else for our socks and pants!!

At the moment we've got a mish mash of furniture some of which is ikea and other second hand bits which don't go together and it looks awful, plus it's not giving us enough storage anyway.

As we have decided to stay and make the place work (landlord wants us to stay all being well) I want to sort this area out so it's functional but also not so ugly!

I was thinking about modular storage but nothing too 90's pine or oppressive! Perhaps in a mid century "light" style - a bit like the String system? But we can't afford String. Does anyone have any ideas or recommendations of how we could achieve this on a budget? I like this idea as we could take it with us when we move and it's flexible.

Or happy to hear other ideas too.

Looking for inspiration / design ideas!

Thank you!

Ikea Kallax unit with desk attachment, files can go in the kallax unit, you could get square boxes or the more expensive drawer accessories for underwear.

Thank you. I thought of kallax but was put off by lack of chest of drawers? I don't really want boxes for my knickers! Grin Feels a bit studenty and I feel like the point of doing this is to get everything stored away properly.

Im not sure on the height but the desk part might be able to be attached to a normal chest of drawers with a bracket if they are the same height instead of desk legs.
