Gas and electricity usage

I'm trying to get my head around how I've been charged so much for my gas and elec bill.
My online account says I've used £787 with of gas and electric in the last year (tarif ends next month)
They have calculated a bill today for £1500. I've paid this much over the year so I thought I would have some credit.
I have used 5829kwh of gas in the last year- which seems really low when I look online but I've checked the meter readings and it is correct?
And 1010kwh of electricity.

Just really confused as to how based on the readings I've spent half of what I've been billed for. I can't view the actual bill for 48 hours and it is the first bill ever produced on the account so I can't look at a previous one.

Just wondering if anyone who knows a bit more than me can shed some light.
My monthly direct debit is £157 a month.

Do you mean they've calculated that over the next year you'll use £1500 of gas/electricity?

How often do you submit readings and what tariff are you on?

canteatlovefood · 22/08/2022 13:07

No that's what I've been billed for the last year up to now. I have a smart meter and my online account shows the monthly readings, they've just never billed me up until today so I was £1500 in credit.

My tariff says Price Promise Sep 2022 with British Gas.

I will probably move from bgas next month but just thought I would be in credit as I normally am.

You won't find a good fixed deal elsewhere and a lot of people are just rolling onto the standard variable rate instead.

How do you know they have billed you £1500 if you cant see a bill?

canteatlovefood · 22/08/2022 14:29

They told me today. I haven't got the full bill but can now see I've been billed for 18918kwh for gas and 2663kwh for elec, which don't match the readings I have. The gas is way off so I'm wondering if I'm reading the meter readings wrong?

I have gas reading of 03095 sept last year, and 4470 today so I'm not sure how to work out the kWh used from that?

Is the gas meter in m³?
It needs to be converted to get kwh

PurplePinecone · 22/08/2022 14:36

Maybe they have given you an estimated bill? Is there a E next to the reading on the bill? That means it's estimated. You can call them and ask for a revised bill based on the actual meter reading

dementedpixie · 22/08/2022 14:38

4470- 3095 = 1375m³

Converting to kwh gives 15623kwh

You'll need to check what readings they are using on the actual bill

canteatlovefood · 22/08/2022 14:47

Have added what i can see in my online account on the usage history, and they what i can see of the bill produced today (cant see the full bill for 48 hours for some reason)
Am I right that the info on the usage history is just completely wrong then if it doesn't remotely match whats on the bill calculated?

Your bill runs from 22nd September 2021 until 21st August 2022.

The other pages are showing usage just from 2022 so from January until now. It doesn't show your usage from 22nd September 2021 until December 31st 2021 which is why the figures differ

DanisEndo · 22/08/2022 14:57

that last pic is period sep 21 to aug 22 whereas the first two are starting from Jan 22. I suspect Aug21-Dec21 would be a period where you might have used a lot of gas.

Not sure if that helps or is relevant!

canteatlovefood · 22/08/2022 15:02

Yeah I can't get the details from sept - dec 21 online for some reason, but surely it was £700+ worth in those 2.5 months? Joined British has on 22nd sept 21

It's just over 3 months not 2½ months. Once you get the bill check the meter readings they are using as they may not be correct despite having a smart meter

Hugasauras · 22/08/2022 15:11

It's over winter the missing months too so it'll be a decent chunk - you were £172 in January so probably similar for December and Nov and a bit less for October.

canteatlovefood · 22/08/2022 15:11

@dementedpixie oh really ok will compare the 2. I assumed that was the point of the smart meter? 🙈

I'm really stressing about rise in energy costs and just want to understand it more before I look at our next tariff

What happens when you hit the arrow that's left of the 2022 at the top of the screenshots?

canteatlovefood · 22/08/2022 15:27

It says £50 but has no readings for oct and nov only December and only electricity no gas readings.

The £787 shown is also probably just the actual fuel cost. By the time you've added standing charges and VAT it will be closer to £1000, so £1500 for the full year is probably not too far off.
