New stair carpet before or after stair lift fitted?

I have just been referred to get a stair lift fitted, which will take approx 5-6 weeks apparently. I do need a new stair carpet but can't figure out whether to get the stair lift fitted first and continue saving for a decent carpet, or whether to get a 'make do' carpet fitted before the stair lift.

Any advice?
