Is this dry rot?

Hi everyone, I have a professional coming next week but I’m going out of my mind! Do you think this is dry rot?? We’ve moved into a fixer upper and we’re going to strip the wallpaper but we had some old wires removed and I think it looks like dry rot! Hoping it’s just old plaster

Is this dry rot?

Dry rot smells of mushrooms, if my memory serves me right.

What makes you think that's dry rot? It just looks a bit dirty to me. If it's dry rot does it crumble to complete dust in your fingers?

Catfluff1 · 18/08/2022 16:53

We’ll we had a full professional clean so I didn’t think it should be dirty. The stuff on the top crumbles off but I don’t think it’s the wood?

Doesn’t look like rot to me , poke a screwdriver in it to see if it’s hard or soft ?

Could be dust from dry rot spores, check under the floors. Could also be red brick dust?

LadyDP · 19/08/2022 07:33

I agree it looks like brick dust. Doesn't look like dry rot. Dry lot looks like thick cobwebs. Not very accurate but that's the best way I can describe it.

That just looks like standard old house plaster/brick dust along with probably flaking paint and about 300 layers of wallpaper trying to fall off. Dry rot tends to leave wood looking pretty spongy and pokeable rather than just like that. Most of my skirtings in the rooms where we’ve not decorated look like that and we definitely don’t have dry rot.

Thank you everyone, this has reassured me. I do have someone coming to check next week but I had convinced myself of the worst!
