What do I do when the packers are here?

Just that really!

Will I feel like a spare part? I will label everything that is not to be packed. I was thinking I could follow them around and clean each room as I go. Will that be possible?

Make cups of tea. Go out for lunch. When a room is finished you could clean it. They didn't do one room at a time when we moved though.

Drinkingpop · 17/08/2022 19:24

I went out. They let me know when they were finished and I went back to clean.

Guard anything you don't want packed including your children. They are ruthless.

JubileeTissues · 17/08/2022 19:26

I went for a Chinese Grin

AlmostSummer21 · 17/08/2022 19:29

Hover, get in the way, tell them all about every object, wince & ask them to be careful 100 times a minute....

or stay out the way, make lots of tea & thank them.

😊

dont leave boxes too long to unpack, my friend found random food items in with toys/books etc. the best was the bag of onions in with 'spare' linen

OhWifey · 17/08/2022 19:30

Oooh I can go out?!

One box, 3 kids, what's not to like?

Parker231 · 17/08/2022 19:32

Go out for the day - they will prefer you out of the way.

JubileeTissues · 17/08/2022 19:36

Of course! They'd rather you went out

MaggieFS · 17/08/2022 19:36

We went to the pub.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/08/2022 19:37

Take down curtains and lampshades if they are coming with you.
Take meter readings.
Round up pets.
Empty indoor waste bins.
Have a wee cry.(I did!).

Crikeyalmighty · 17/08/2022 19:38

I went out buying them sandwiches and coffees and stuff and popped out for lunch- they didn't pack or load room by room though , so we had cleaners in after everything was packed

OhWifey · 17/08/2022 19:39

Amazing. Husband and kids will be packed off. I didn't know I'd be getting bonus cafe time.

Oh and how long will they take? Average 3 bed house amount of stuff. Packing to move the next day so leaving beds.

Fourmoos · 17/08/2022 20:15

My neighbours had the packers here today from 8-4. Average 3 bed semi.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/08/2022 20:23

4 bedder with a lot of stuff was 9 to6.30 - but loaded up next morning

moreteensthansense · 17/08/2022 20:24

Make tea. No, more tea than that. No, even more.

stuntbubbles · 17/08/2022 20:28

DD and I are getting out of the way. DP is already frantic and annoying and clearly planning on hovering and helping and going “that’s delicate!” and “I already packed my records” and following them around and generally getting on their wick. I am powerless to stop him.

It is quite handy to have someone there before they finish, to check everything’s actually packed – our last lot missed an entire set of drawers in the kitchen, and were starting to take things off the wall that were staying. They also packed two shelves in the shed that had a giant sheet of paper taped across them saying “don’t pack”…

ShesNotTheMessiah · 17/08/2022 20:29

They'll take pretty much a full day, I think.

Yes: bugger off out for the day and leave them to it! Grin

You may have taken your shoes off every single time you went in your home when it was yours.

Do not do it when the packers are in.

We moved today. 4 men, 2 vans. 9.30 till 12pm. We basically went in whatever rooms they weren't in and dusted/hoovered

Yup this. Moved last week. We unpacked over two days and I found a used nappy in a nappy bag that DH had left on edge of cot dresser that morning (they arrived at 8am). I’m sure they would have packed the baby, if we hadn’t dropped her off at childcare already.

I put valuables and things in the car beforehand and then they just pack like locusts swarming crops. It’s amazing. They also somehow perform magic by getting furniture through doors without dismantling. Things they do dismantle, they do in seconds, like the cot. I am in absolute awe.

I made them tea and stayed out the way. In the new house, direct where you want stuff.

Drinkingpop · 17/08/2022 21:53

Small house, but they packed on the morning of the move in a few hours. They were amazing. Then they went off to help at another house whilst I was waiting for all the money transferring and getting the key shenanigans. Then they unloaded and reassembled furniture in new house in about 2 hours. Money well spent.

I was working (from home) that day. They came and and packed everything away other than the pc, table
and chair. Was fine.
but going out is a good plan if not working.
