Covenants!

I'm so ignorant about these as I've never lived in an "estate" house :( The house I'm buying has a range of covenants, including things like you can't park a caravan on the drive, put up a sign, cause nuisance etc etc. I'm assuming these are quite common to properties built by big developers. The house was built in 1988. My questions to all you experts are 1) how much notice of these covenants does anyone really take after all this time? and 2) could they cause me difficulty in doing a loft extension? Any wisdom or advice gratefully received!

Our cul de sac of ten homes has these but no-one adheres to them. The developer has died since, our solicitors said it would be very difficult to enforce. We're not allowed caravans or work vehicles. Working from home. Chickens which was amusing. The covenant is of its time 1960s

Ah yes I've heard about chickens - and that was a house that's less than 20 yrs old. I guess I'll have to accept them - as you say enforcement would be tricky.
