Builder keeps messaging me that im a waste of time

Just wanted to know if this is normal or was I in the wrong. We just purchased our first home and called a builder over for a kitchen quote. His quote was more than double what we expected so I sent a message to say thank you for your time and politely declined. He asked why and I explained his quote was above our expected message. Since then he's sent two angry messages that I wasted his time and petrol. I have now blocked him but is this normal? I thought it was common practice to get a few quotes. For the record he is a well established builder so I thought he would know there is a chance we would decline

No I don't think that is normal at all! I often get several quotes for things and I've never had anyone say that to me - in fact I usually have the opposite problem, in that they come round and then I never hear from them again, they don't even give me the quote!

EllenWaiteourkid · 02/08/2022 19:00

He sounds unstable.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 02/08/2022 19:01

At least you found out he was a wanker before you let him in and he was halfway through the work.

Look on the bright side.

takeitandleaveit · 02/08/2022 19:02

Bloody cheek! No, that's not normal, and I bet he wouldn't be doing it if you were a man.

Unbored · 02/08/2022 19:03

Really poor behaviour from the builder.

Aubree17 · 02/08/2022 19:03

Very unprofessional.

I dread to think what would have happened had you let him loose on your kitchen.

You did the right thing blocking him.

What builder gets every job that he quotes for!? There will always be times when he quotes and doesn't get the gig.

Unless you budget was ridiculously unrealistic, I'd say he WBU.

BlueMongoose · 02/08/2022 19:16

All tradespeople know they don't get every job they quote for. You were being polite to tell him he hadn't got it, not everyone does.
I think you dodged a bullet, there.

I once spoke to an architect who behaved like this. Rang early in the morning and late and night then sent me an angry text about how
Rude I was not to take his call - at 10am on New Year’s Day!

some people are unhinged. Best to find out before you agree to purchase their services!

Parkingt111 · 02/08/2022 19:24

Thank you for all your responses and I'm glad to know I was not being unreasonable
And you are right I did have a lucky escape

To give an example of one of his quotes he was charging £1500 to rip out an old kitchen and break a small non bearing wall
My husband has since taken the kitchen out himself today and will break the wall with his brother as we realised there are somethings we can do ourselves

Not normal or OK. I've had a decorator pester me for more work when I didn't accept a quote , because it was suspiciously cheap...
And an architect repeatedly email and message asking for me to accept his proposal, he took alot of getting rid of that one. I see him on our local fb page being moderately unstable, I don't think his divorce went well.

mindutopia · 03/08/2022 12:30

I think now you know why he’s so desperate for work when other builders are so busy they can’t even find time to give a quote.

Parkingt111 · 03/08/2022 14:06

@mindutopia I think you are right the amount of builders who said will give me a quote and didn't even get back to me was too much to count. Not to mention he also wanted me to pay everything in cash. I'm just surprised as he has alot of followers on his face book and seem to be well established

It’s not normal.

You also probably don’t want the builder who is desperate for work, even if he wasn’t unhinged. There is always a chance a talented builder is just starting out or had a cancellation or just a string of bad luck, but good builders tend to be in demand.
