Panicking about kitchen colour - DIY kitchens

northernshite · 31/07/2022 17:44

I've ordered my kitchen in Heron Grey and have until tomorrow to make any amendments. I am worried I will regret the grey. I wanted a nice blue really but worried about it dating. I don't love the only standard blue that DIY kitchens do (Cobham blue) but I'm now thinking it's better than grey - it's a decent sized rectangular room and i'm having white marble effect quartz worktops and probably borrowed light (v pale blue walls). I don't want to wait for a bespoke colour so need to pick between the two - help!!

Every colour will date. What does your heart want?

dudsville · 31/07/2022 17:46

It's a big expenditure. You should really want it.

SquishyGloopyBum · 31/07/2022 17:46

Pick what your heart says, you need to live with it, so if you want blue, go blue! To be honest blue and grey are both fashionable colours so I wouldn't worry about that.

Everything dates one day.

florianfortescue · 31/07/2022 17:46

I'd get the blue. The grey will look dated more quickly imo - I think grey interiors are already a bit passé. Makes me think of that cleaning expert woman Mrs Hinch ... grey is the new magnolia.

RNBrie · 31/07/2022 17:47

They're both fine colours but I'd go with the Cobham Blue every time. Are you having an island? You could always have your wall units grey and your island blue... that's very en vouge at the moment but it does look nice...

northernshite · 31/07/2022 17:54

I am having an island but am not sold on two tone kitchens - I've seen a few with blue base units and white wall units but I'm not keen. I'm leaning towards blue - I'm pretty sure I'll like it for a good few years and can get it painted one day if I end up hating it. Thanks for the comments everyone.

I am not a fan of two tone kitchens either OP, grey is quite classic, long story,
I was planning on a grey kitchen, but in the end we ordered sage.

We are in the process of choosing a new kitchen, and I’m finding that the colour is harder to decide than many other aspects!

i really like the blue that DIY kitchens do, and I’d go for that over a grey, especially if you’re having a white work surface. I don’t think it will date anything like as quickly as grey. But, yes, everything dates.

i have no idea what I’m going to choose, but that’s just my view if you’re typing between that blue or grey.

averythinline · 31/07/2022 18:01

I love my blue kitchen with white worktop... its so fresh.... even on grey days.... grey is ok but i thjnk sucks the light out a bit on gloomy days.....

Maireas · 31/07/2022 18:02

Grey is a miserable colour. Go for the blue.

tigertigerg · 31/07/2022 18:05

blue is the new grey
green is the new blue
pink is the new green

go with what you want.

QuebecBagnet · 31/07/2022 18:11

A friend has cobham blue, it’s really nice.

SpidersAreShitheads · 31/07/2022 18:55

Hey OP, DIY Kitchens do lots of different standard blues - do you mean the kitchen style you want only has Cobham Blue as an option? Sorry for stupid question 🤦🏻‍♀️😅 Are there no similar kitchens that have a nicer blue that you prefer? When I looked on DIY Kitchens I found that there were quite a lot that were similar but with quite different colour options.

I don't particularly like grey, and I've never been a fan of the recent trend for grey interior decor. So my initial thought was instantly to say Cobham Blue. Then I looked to see what shade it was and it's a very dark blue - almost navy? I know you said the room is a decent size, but are you happy with dark units? The grey you chose was quite a light colour so it's quite the difference.

If it's being trendy that you're worried about, navy and dark blue kitchens are very much on trend too. So it's likely that grey and dark blue will go out of fashion equally quickly... Personally I'm not really bothered what the latest trends are, I like what I like. I would say don't worry about trends, if you love the colour just get it and stuff what the trends are!

If you prefer the lighter units, do they have a cashmere/taupe type colour or a sage green? I really like cornflower blue/lighter blues but if they didn't have that, a soft green would be my next choice. Does that appeal?

If you're going for the Cobham blue, have you looked to see how it goes with your light worktops and pale walls? Will be quite a striking contrast - not that it's a bad thing, just that not everyone likes that strong, two-tone effect. The other thing is that with such a dark colour it might be trickier to paint over in the future (as you suggested) - although you could just get replacement doors to freshen things up when you're ready for a change.

Picture yourself in the Heron Grey kitchen and then the Cobalt Blue kitchen - really picture it....which one makes you feel happier? Or neither?

PragmaticWench · 31/07/2022 20:15

It's something you'll live with for many years. I'd wait and have a bespoke blue.

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 31/07/2022 20:28

I've recently had a blue kitchen fitted.
I bloody love it

brokengoalposts · 31/07/2022 20:30

I have a dark grey DIY Kitchens kitchen, I absolutely love it but we do have other colours in there as it's a sitting room too, so it's not dowdy. That said, I'd go for the blue if I was you. Don't worry about fashions, it only needs to please you.

Flaunch · 31/07/2022 20:39

I’ve had a navy kitchen (kitchen stori Parisian blue) for 3 years no and I still love it. Everyone that comes in compliments it.

Grey is just boring.

Weefreetiffany · 31/07/2022 20:48

Do you spend most of your time in the kitchen in the day or in the evening. Darker colours look better in the evening and lighter in the day. Which direction do your windows face? East light looks lovely with grey but all other lights I would say blue

Isseywith3witchycats · 31/07/2022 20:50

we went into DIY kitchens intending to get a dark grey kitchen and ended up with the petrol blue one instead so glad now still love my kitchen

Blue over grey any day

honkeytonkwoman38 · 31/07/2022 21:20

I've got the duck egg colour from diy kitchens. Love it. Can't see it dating tbh.

That’s a lovely colour @Isseywith3witchycats !

limitededitionbarbie · 31/07/2022 21:40

I got grey then every time I imagined it I imagined it navy. Should of went with my heart.

I love it still but I still wish I'd gone navy and rose gold.
