Panicking about kitchen colour - DIY kitchens

northernshite · 31/07/2022 17:44

I've ordered my kitchen in Heron Grey and have until tomorrow to make any amendments. I am worried I will regret the grey. I wanted a nice blue really but worried about it dating. I don't love the only standard blue that DIY kitchens do (Cobham blue) but I'm now thinking it's better than grey - it's a decent sized rectangular room and i'm having white marble effect quartz worktops and probably borrowed light (v pale blue walls). I don't want to wait for a bespoke colour so need to pick between the two - help!!

My friend had grey wooden units with lighter grey worktop, recently she had the worktop replaced with white marble and all the grey units have been sprayed dark blue. I did like the grey but the dark blue looks much nicer, and if she gets bored of that she can always get it re-sprayed another colour. Go with your heart.

That’s a nice blue - is that standard colour or bespoke?

I'd go for the blue, but I'm biased as I also have blue cabinets 😉

Definitely go with what you love!

Ours are HMKOC not DIY and are a mix of F&B oval room blue and a cream (can't recall which - think it was a Craig & Rose colour). Our island is also oval room blue. I've never regretted choosing blue for one moment. Initially I painted the cabinets in Little Greene Knightsbridge (a really dark taupe) but it was way too dark 🙄

I've attached a pic of one area of ours.

Loving those colours @LibertyLily- would love to see more of your kitchen!

userxx · 02/08/2022 22:59

@icklekid Wow, I absolutely love it.

tillyandmilly · 02/08/2022 23:02

Grey is so dated now its everywhere ! Go for the blue - very jealous my kitchen is over 20 years old and has cellotape holding it all together!

northernshite · 03/08/2022 10:54

I've changed it to blue (wasn't that straightforward post ordering but done now!). Feeling very happy about it - thanks everyone.

I would recommend waiting! The wait honestly flies by and pales in comparison to your life with kitchen. We went for the bespoke colour in “railings” and I LOVE it. It looks dark blue. I didn’t like the Cobram blue either.

skippy67 · 03/08/2022 13:38

We went for Railings too. Beautiful colour. For us, the Cobham blue was a bit too blue, and not dark enough.

icklekid · 04/08/2022 06:36

Mine is standard colour but actually wickes not diy kitchens. Thanks for lovely comments though !

Have purchased a new kitchen from Diy kitchens , went with dove grey anyone no how I can match colour of my dove grey doors so I can make some furniture in her same colours

Parkingt111 · 27/08/2022 19:21

Go with what your heart says
I was also thinking of a Navy originally but have now gone for a warm cashmere shaker kitchen with gold accents
It helps to make a little mood board to better envision how it will look all put together

limitededitionbarbie · 27/08/2022 19:38

Please post a pic when it's in so I can regret my choice of dark grey even more Blush

CaptainBeakyandhisband · 27/08/2022 19:51

I’m way late to this thread but I’d choose the blue. I just want to add for anyone changing colours on DIY that you may also need to manually change the colour of the base unit. Found that out the hard way myself unfortunately.

I do wonder what all the stalkers of mesh hinch will do once they either stop being manipulated or realise even she has ditched the grey

northernshite · 28/08/2022 21:09

Kitchen arrives next week.. still a couple of weeks until it's all fitted with worktops and plumbing etc but I am happy with the blue!

SquirrelCity · 29/08/2022 06:46

Brilliant! We went for a 'danger' colour (heart over head decision) for our kitchen 18 months ago and still love it so much.

Go on,what was the colour?

The blue is very bold, and as we had a lot of units, I decided to do all the lower units grey and the tall and wall units blue as I was worried it could make the kitchen look too dark. That's mirrored at the other side too with blue units next to the extractor fan.

The blue here is too random. You have grey units, beige floor and a black fridge. It just doesn't look well planned. And if it was planned, it doesn't work

Inneedofaholiday · 30/08/2022 06:49

Coloured kitchens are the trend and will all go out of fashion regardless of colour (beige and cashmere seem to be replacing blue, grey & green) so go with what you love and if you want a change in the future, replace the doors. You can get iron on edging to match so the cupboards won’t need replacing.

CaptainBeakyandhisband · 30/08/2022 08:20

I think that’s why we’ve always gone two-toned with the island as an accent colour and the rest of the kitchen neutral. The idea is that the island could be resprayed later for minimal cost and upheaval (and we nearly did that in our last house but decided to move so didn’t)

Katypp · 30/08/2022 08:27

My mother drummed into me an obsession about things dating more or less from birth!
As is evidenced from this thread and the DIY Facebook forum, navy blue is most definitely the colour of the moment. I would say on the Facebook page, 75% of kitchen are Cobham blue.
I think those saying blue will not date are deluding themselves tbh. It's a bit like saying on the baby names forum that Milly/Tilly/Teddie will never date - because they are everywhere at the moment, people think they always will be. They won't.
I was torn between white, grey and cashmere and in the end dismissed white because it would be too stark in our kitchen. Grey is dated to some, but to me is a much more neutral colour than blue and can be incorporated into colour schemes a lot more easily in tje future

northernshite · 08/10/2022 10:14

It's not quite finished and the plastic is still on the doors but the blue kitchen is in and functioning and I love it. Very happy with the blue.
