What is the GRANDEST house you can buy under 500k (just for fun)

Occasionally I browse property all over the country and come upon a gem for under 500 that has 10 rooms and 12 foot ceilings and sweeping staircases in an unlikely place - mostly Victorian seaside resorts Grin

So what's good out there at the moment ?

Slightly over budget but rather nice.
French castle

Cheap but definitely in need of some work...
Eek!

This a little over budget too.
Twisty staircase

So many fun places on that site!

These are all beautiful and - I say this as a rational person who definitely didn't watch too many horror films as a child - all definitely, 100% haunted.

I would spend all day arranging fresh flowers and eating French bread and having tiny birds land delicately on my shoulder... and all night hiding from the ghosts of vengeful castle owners.

oh my That is just stunning!!!!!

Just said to DH, can you get a job in the middle of nowhere and I will just lord it around like a day of the manor!

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/122388476#/?channel=RES_BUY But of a dooer upper, scope to extend. Just under 14 acres and a snip at £50k under budget.

Winner for me! You'd have to spend that again to bring it up to scratch, but what a house it would be!

In Rightmove speak, " In need of some updating"

Lovely though, in its derelict way.

TheCrowening · 29/07/2022 01:14

I was looking at this on the Wowhaus website recently and saved a few kitchen pictures to show my husband, who is now terrified I’m going to go all Wandavision on our Victorian terrace (I’m not).

I love it though.

SnottyWitch · 29/07/2022 02:47

@resuwen @CPL593H Agree with you both, bags of potential and an absolute money pit. It’s grand but I definitely cheated with the part dereliction 😆 but it’s nice to dream. I can’t figure out if it has any habitable rooms, thought it may have but now I’m not sure.

Wouldn’t get anything particularly grand for that budget where we are with current prices and we’re not even in the South. 10 years ago there were a few bargains, not quite country houses but big detached, semi-rural/village location, sometimes listed, 4/5 bed needing TLC were feasible and you would have got some change but not in the current climate.

@LaurieFairyCake Great thread!

SnottyWitch · 29/07/2022 02:52

Oh my it actually is habitable! The video is a 3d floor plan! my.matterport.com/show/?m=wkdQrkVXSAL&back=1

Oblomov22 · 29/07/2022 03:51

OMFG this is the best MN thread EVER. Grin It's even better than my normal favourite 'how full is your Christmas fridge, with photos'. I'll take them all, thanks.

Oblomov22 · 29/07/2022 03:58

I love the Scottish turret and the Carlisle one. Wow.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 29/07/2022 04:39

The placement of the washing machine is making my eye twitch.

This one needs a bit of work - but that staircase! The hallway! The stained glass! The view! Those tiles in the bathroom!

This is my favourite so far! Quite a few have missed the grand mark and hit “ugly and sad” instead but this is wonderful, yes please.

Lovely game!

I like this one in Dingwall.

So pretty

Granted, needs work, but how lovely could this be!

I just can't understand how cheap Newark is. Nice town, commuting distance from London with gorgeous houses. What's not to like?

DuesToTheDirt · 29/07/2022 20:17

I think this belongs here. Not grand as such, but a whole village for £22k!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 29/07/2022 20:32

Can I play? This one may not be on the same as the Scottish entries, but has tonnes more charm:

Sheffield is “commuting distance to London” these days?

CPL593H · 30/07/2022 12:42

The Dingwall house is stunning, Newark one has lovely features.

My offering, 4 bed detached Georgian, well under budget

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/121779116#/?channel=RES_BUY

Lovely area too (and it's habitable! )

This one is a bit of a cheat. If you go past about 40 pages of the little "done" coach house, you get to the "actual" house.

For anyone who likes a challenge and is on friendly terms with Elon Musk Grin

CPL593H · 30/07/2022 12:45

@SnottyWitch I think it makes yours look like a new build!

spidersenses · 30/07/2022 12:50

Love this game. There are some stunning properties. In reality, as another poster said, a lot of the Scottish properties are "offers over" and will go for significantly more than the price they are marked as.

ViscountessBridgerton · 31/07/2022 16:56

Why spend 500k when you can get this fella for 50k? You certainly wouldn't need to worry about noisy neighbours...
