What is the GRANDEST house you can buy under 500k (just for fun)

Occasionally I browse property all over the country and come upon a gem for under 500 that has 10 rooms and 12 foot ceilings and sweeping staircases in an unlikely place - mostly Victorian seaside resorts Grin

So what's good out there at the moment ?

In my city, just a large semi in a decent area. Nothing grand www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/124470965#/?channel=RES_BUY
Or maybe a detached newbuild on an estate away from any amenities

Out of town, there is a large farmhouse, developed to death (particularly that terrifying staircase)

More dull new builds

This is cute www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/125360270#/?channel=RES_BUY

And this could be cute www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/123288407#/?channel=RES_BUY

This would be my input, it could be a great house and certainly looks beautiful from the outside. That said i am shocked at how little 500k gets you, even in the NE

I skipped past that one on my search. Disappointing interior.

SnottyWitch · 28/07/2022 00:26

www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/122388476#/?channel=RES_BUY But of a dooer upper, scope to extend. Just under 14 acres and a snip at £50k under budget.

We don’t have many of the beautiful, historic, stylish homes here like you have there. Most are newer, and they are designed with the hot weather in mind. Almost all are ranch homes. The sand won’t allow for basements and the heat stops most from another floor! This is a fairly typical home in my neighborhood, but a little larger than what I have and theirs has a pool. Maybe a third of our homes have pools. The price is about £457,000. www.zillow.com/homedetails/8633-Pinetree-Dr-W-Seminole-FL-33772/47137817_zpid/? I think I’ve enjoyed seeing your homes more than you’ll like seeing ours.

Or this one. I love the outside of it.

This one comes with the Northern Lights. Stunning.

My parents stayed here many years ago, the food was fabulous. But you've got two 1.5h boat trips to get to Thurso in the north of Scotland and I'm not sure if they'll sell to a non-Orcadian.

sorcerersapprentice · 27/07/2022 23:13

No you don't, it's just a flat

GettingReal · 28/07/2022 00:46

I see they managed to modernise all the internal character out of the village school.

Violinist64 · 28/07/2022 13:39

It seems that in order to snap up one of these gems we would need to move to the more remote parts of Scotland for most of them - not very practical for most of us, unfortunately. I rather like the look of the American ranch too but again not practical. Ah, well, back to dreaming.

I don’t know why my post was underlined.

That is fabulous, I can see it as one of houses in Sex Education.

housemaus · 28/07/2022 19:20

This one needs a bit of work - but that staircase! The hallway! The stained glass! The view! Those tiles in the bathroom!

Yellownotblue · 28/07/2022 19:23

I love it! They should rent it out, I’d love to stay in a place like that for a few nights. The past is a foreign country…

AnawithoneN · 28/07/2022 19:32

This is amazing 😍

CPL593H · 28/07/2022 19:32

I've seen lots of gorgeous remote places. Usually they are lacking in the roof department. Or electricity.

Fascinating to look though!

FettleOfKish · 28/07/2022 19:36

Looks quite grand until you realise it's a 2 bedroom flat inside the big house, and that DH would only be able to stand up straight in about 20% off Sad

FettleOfKish · 28/07/2022 19:37

20% of it, not off!

AnawithoneN · 28/07/2022 19:40

Not much around me, but I love this: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/124334027#/?channel=RES_BUY

(not sure if it’s been posted yet, I might have missed a link or two…)

Your own harbour complete with both and net store 😀

I actually nearly went as far as booking a viewing on that one a couple of months ago. Though it would make an amazing holiday business / development (sailing lessons). But check out the map 😅. You’d get radioactive fish.

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/07/2022 19:44

Not much around here for 500k. This one comes up as the most expensive in a radius of 10 miles

Here

WobblyLondoner · 28/07/2022 19:59

Can't get a 2 bed flat near me for that. Amazed at the Aberystwyth house by the front - thought they would go for much more.

With apologies for being a wet blanket, I couldn't help noticing quite a few of these are in Scotland and advertised as 'offers over'. There is no definitive rule on this but some properties go for quite a lot over the advertised offers over price. So anything in the high £400k region would probably break the £500k barrier. Just in case any of you are checking what you can afford and planning a move 😉

More here is you're interested. www.heraldscotland.com/news/20103695.need-know-offers-over-system/
