How to appoint a surveyor

I'm selling for the first time ever and buying now for the first time alone.
I'm asking for advice on how to choose a surveyor. I'd like a good one. What do I look for? I've had two quotes so far and haven't read them because I won't really know how to choose. Quotes so far are through my solicitor and my estate agent.
Do I trawl the internet and appoint one indepently?
I'm out of my depth and don't want to make a bad decision.
I'm not even young I've been here for 32 years and downsizing. It's a maze.
Please help me out wise ones. I don't like dithering stuff 😀

Hi @Monty27 where are you based? Someone here may be able to recommend a good surveyor? The service has become much more standardised in the past few years so it is easier to compare. You’ll need a RICS accredited surveyor to carry out the work so maybe start there as they’ll be able to supply the details of qualified persons in your area? Do you need a mortgage valuation ?

I went to our local Facebook group and searched solicitors to find solicitors who prop had had good experiences with. Did the same thing for the surveyor on local group where we're moving to

when we moved to a new area I asked for recommendations on the local town Facebook forum. Several people recommended the same person and I then contacted him. Word of mouth and personal recommendations are good. He was great and going forward I would recommend.
