How did you decide to move?

Love our current house, could extend it to make it exactly what we want. But we’ve seen another house that gives us the things our current house can’t (detached, better location for school catchments) but it would take longer (talking years) to do it how we want it and our current house is already great and would be even better with an extension. Can’t change the fact that it’s a terrace though. Scared if we move we’ll miss this house but if we don’t move we’ll regret it too.

how did you decide you were ready to move house?

When the thing you gain from moving, feels more important than the thing you gain from staying.

If it "only" was giving your dc the chance to be at a better school, that would be enough for most parents.
If I could afford a detached house, there is no way in the world I would choose to stay in a terraced.

I don't think the need to decorate a house would put me off buying it if I could afford a house that was SO much better than the one I was in. Apart from anything else, decorating a house is a bit like painting the forth bridge anyway - surely you'll still have to continue to do things to your current house, and "getting an extension" is never as simple as it sounds.

This. We kept mulling it over but then one day it just hit us, we’d had enough of that house and we wanted somewhere different.

In your case it’s weighing up the pros and cons and costs of extension vs moving. What do you want from your house in the future? How do you see yourself living in 5, 10, 15 years time?

Those two positives are huge! Do it. They are both things your current house can never give you.

We love our house and with some more work it would be perfect. However we are planning to move for location. As much as I like our house I am willing to move to a smaller house for the right location.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply, you’ve all helped us clarify our thoughts.

We wanted better school catchment, so it was that, as we need to apply end of this year. Hoping to move in the next 4 weeks

It was easy for us as we had always wanted to escape to the country and we got the opportunity. When we next move it will be for a more private garden.

We wanted off road parking and not to be in a terrace and to have a bigger garden. We looked at a lot of houses. But there was a confluence of my husband being bored of looking, a house that was a good fit and the neighbours at old house being particularly annoying.

It worked out well for us even though new house needed 2 years of work.
