To do the garden up ? Am I crazy?

We will get an extension down to the back of the house in about a years time - maybe a bit longer. This will mean we will no longer have outside /side access to the garden.I am thinking of getting the garden done now- just a new patio and cutting hedges and tidying borders etc.

will my new patio (slabs) get ruined with the extension in a years time ?

I want the garden done first so I don’t have to log everything through the house after the extension

thanks

Crazy! Before you start the extension have your garden materials delivered and store them until the build is complete. Then do the garden, you might have some stuff to take through the house but hopefully not too much.

I've just done an extension and the garden together, because like you, I no longer have side access to the garden - it made sense to do it at the same time.

As the above poster says. I was in the same position OP and my garden was literally ploughed to a field. I need to get it done now & yes, everything has to come through the house...

Can you just roll in some of the garden work with the extension? We've just had a building project and the builders laid paving and porcelain tiles, built garden room and did some fencing all while doing the house stuff. Most of the plants and grass were destroyed so I would wait for anything like that.

MyCatIsNotFittingMyKitchen · 19/07/2022 09:35

Definitely wait. We are starting a single storey extension and having a patio done at the same time. Slightly different to you as we will retain side access - but much easier to get it done while the diggers are there.

Janesdufflecoat · 19/07/2022 13:21

Yeah they take sit on diggers in there to do your foundations - no point doing your garden!

Rina66 · 19/07/2022 13:29

Don't do it, the garden gets trashed when you extend at the back.

MeatballMeatball · 19/07/2022 13:33

They factored our garden redoing into the build. So materials delivered before foundation digging started then the garden was chaotically destroyed and then slabs went down once build finished.

Could you maybe do the back of the garden for now, to give you somewhere lovely to sit and then do the area nearer the house after the extension?
