Loft room (but not proper conversion)

House we are buying has a skylight in the loft and apparently according to guy that did survey is all completely boarded up (ceilings etc) and has electric up there.

I was thinking it would be a nice extra space for kids, bean bags etc, Tv etc but we wouldn’t be able to afford to have it properly converted atm. Daughters new room is small (got to compromise somewhere!) so was thinking if we could make this a useable space without actually converting it would be a great idea.

is this a thing? Anyone else done this? Would love to see photos!

The trickiest thing is getting the stairs in. Either you go for ‘space saving’ ones that you would have to change if you ever did a full conversion, or you do the proper stairs now, which may be a significant cost anyway. It all depends on if you have to remove parts of walls in the first floor rooms to fit the stairs in at a gentle enough rise to be building regs compliant.

We have a loft room which was already done when we bought the house, its not got building regs approval so can't be marketed as a bedroom but it does have a proper staircase in situ which was accommodated by making the box room even smaller. To be honest, the box room couldnt even be called a single room now as you can't get a full single bed length in it. I don't know if I would have made that choice but we do have nice spacious loft room which all my kids have used as a bedroom over the past 18 years so its worked well for us.
