I’ve just got my first quote through for a house move. Full pack and removal for a 6-bed house (approx 2500 Sq feet)….
£15,000!

Is this normal?! Greater London area, moving locally.

That's ridiculous. Is it a typo? I'd pack myself for a start.

We just moved from a 3 bed, not in London admittedly, hired 2 men and a van. Cost less than £200.

Screweduphousemove · 05/07/2022 12:37

Wow! That seems excessive. We are doing a local move, a 4 bed house to a 4 bed house and it’s going to be £890. We are in Wales and packing ourselves though.

Kimwexlerr · 05/07/2022 12:38

Thank you!
No not a typo!!

Depends I guess on how much stuff you have and if there is a lot of things like art works and a piano etc. to package up. It does sound a lot though! Are you sure it isn't £1500?

SBAM · 05/07/2022 12:46

That sounds a lot. We moved zone 4 to 6 in 2019 and it was £800, including the boxes but packing ourself. 3 bed to a 4 bed, so maybe a bit less stuff. I’d be shocked if costs have gone up that much though. Is it definitely 15 thousand and not 15 hundred?

What?? Paid over that to move out of a 2 bed place 20 years ago!! Well, the company did as part of a work relocation.

OP, it's not far off the going rate based on a full level of tear down / set up service, insurance cover and distance covered ie will the crew need overnight accommodations etc.

You could make it cheaper by boxing up smalls yourself.

alwaysmovingforwards · 05/07/2022 12:49

I'd get 3 like for like quotes though to compare.

SBAM · 05/07/2022 12:49

If you’re the Essex side of Greater London essexremovals.com/domestic-removals/ these guys were fab. Super efficient, nothing was too much trouble. It was hot and they were running up and down flights of stairs with boxes like it was nothing.

Kimwexlerr · 05/07/2022 12:52

Yes I’m awaiting two more quotes and hoping they are a bit more reasonable. We do have a piano and quite a lot of pictures, but still!

3 bed house to a 4 bed. X 2 vans + 3 men, moving 75 miles away starting in London and it's £1100.

FixTheBone · 05/07/2022 17:58

That's taking the 'P'.

For 15 grand I'd hire a van an do it myself, regardless of the number of trips it took.

As an NHS surgeon that's 3 1/2 months take home pay, pretty sure I could move any size house in that time.

LittleSockOfHorrors · 05/07/2022 18:01

I've had my house packed and moved to Australia and then unpacked at the other end for less than half of that.

Bid876 · 05/07/2022 18:08

We moved last March £4.5k, we are now returning between the exactly same properties and the cost has increased to £7.5k, with significantly less belongings, I.e taking almost no furniture at all, just mainly personal belongings.

Apparently the increase is just to price increases and the fact more people of moving post covid.

Bid876 · 05/07/2022 18:18

I should have said, what we brought over that we are not taking back:

10ft trampoline
double wardrobe
single wardrobe
tall bookcase
patio table and chairs
large bbq
set Of large 8 draw chest of draws
console table
4ft dolls house & other large toys E.g our generation camper can, Doc McStuffin ambulance…
6 bikes
3 scooters
2 x patio boxes full of garden stuff and toys
DHs tools including electric saws and stuff
no saucepans, coffee machine, microwave, toaster or crockery

All this stuff came with us last year but we are getting or gotten rid of it all on top of general clothes and other things, and yet we are still paying £3K more.

Kimwexlerr · 07/07/2022 10:00

The other quotes are in: £10k and £5k.

That’s a relief!
