Ex display DFS sofa- bugs

We bought an ex-display sofa from DFS (we saved around £300 off the brand new price and got it in 1 week rather than 12-13), it’s beautiful however the sofa sags (heavy foot/butt traffic from the shop so obviously been sat on a lot by many) which I can live with however; we keep finding bites on ourselves (us and kids), I could put the baby down and he’d get up with a bug like bite on his face, we’ve took some cushions out and can’t find anything obvious. Nothing in our bed, nothing in our clothes. We spent the week away camping with all our bedding and no bites, come home and have a film day on the sofa and all bitten.

What can I do? We got it just over 8 weeks ago.

We have no pets, only had two other people sit on it outside of the immediate family (and they have no pets). I’m just not sure what to do, it’s a heavy velvet sofa, dark navy so hard to observe but no bugs seen to the naked eye.

Even if an item is a display model it should have a guarantee so you need to ask them to sort out the sagging asap.

As to the bugs and bites it is impossible to prove it came from DFS.

However if you get them to visit to sort out the sagging you may find out the source of the bugs if it is the sofa.

I have called re. The sagging; they’ve said it’s my responsibility because of the filling (it’s fibre not foam) that I need to fluff them daily, despite doing that they’re still sagging.

Did you pay by credit card or with any other type of credit?

RedWingBoots · 30/06/2022 18:48

www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/consumer-rights-act-aKJYx8n5KiSl#product-quality-what-should-you-expect

Contact them in writing - email or letter - not by telephone and don't take being fobbed off.

If you bought by credit then the credit company is also liable but they will tell you to deal with the retailer first, and only contact them if you can't.

It’s on credit yes, being paid off monthly.

Thank you for that, we’re also paying £5 a month extra for extra insurance to cover spillages and things so I should really look into this too. I appreciate that, thanks again.

The sagging issue I feel is hopeless. We bought a sofa from Sofology that was hopelessly soft and sagging after a few weeks despite having foam filling so supposedly firmer. We got no where with compensation/replacement despite several letters etc & paying for it on credit. In the end we just had to bite the bullet and sell it and buy a new sofa elsewhere.
Re the bugs, I would think you have a case if you can prove it. So I would concentrate on that aspect and ask them if they can send a professional to test it for bugs as it’s not fit for purpose if it is infested.

EatYourFive · 01/07/2022 15:58

Check for bed bugs, they would hide within the frame, underside, joints or seams and not necessarily easy to spot. Their excrement would appear as black spots or lines.
I had the misfortune to experience an infestation in my student hall many years ago, horrible. The good thing is they tend to come out and feed at night time so hopefully it's something else.

When moved into my first flat, I kept being bitten. I bought flea spray ‘for the home’ and sprayed it over my sofas and carpets and that cleared it up.
