Can anyone recommend me toggled dimmer switches in black/tarnished metal, that won't break the bank please?

Very hopeful bump

This is a company I have used before - not sure if they have what you are looking for but a big selection

Elesi, TLC, Dowsing & Rey and Inspyer worth a look too

WelshMoth · 02/07/2022 10:06

Dear me they are SO expensive. I've even tried to look at ways and of tarnishing a cheaper metal myself to get the same effect.

Any ideas? I have about 25 light switches in my build - I'll need to remortgage if I want nicer switches and sockets tbh.

If there are no realistic prices, I think I'll have to do a set of switches per room per month!

I’ve bookmarked this site for our reno - prices seem reasonable!

WelshMoth · 02/07/2022 11:52

@MsShopper thanks - these DO look reasonable.

They're not quite the antique look I want but I think I'm going to have to re-think my approach. These prices are great!

I went for Dowsing & Reynolds. At first I ruled them out because of the cost, but then I succumbed to temptation, and I don't regret it at all. Every day I enjoy using them. The finish on the black is beautiful, and the plate finish matches the toggle switch. (On some even where they're the same colour the finish is slightly different.)

I also looked at www.varilight.co.uk/ranges/range-urban-matt-black.php#results, which were about half the price of D&R, and have good reviews.

I got mine from here https://www.powerdiscount.co.uk/click-scolmore-633-c.asp

Quite a few different styles you may find something you like

jackstini · 03/07/2022 16:12

Screwfix or Toolstation might be cheaper

Or can you just buy the covers rather than the whole switch? (not sure what you have currently)

We got some from this place, stainless steel effect for us and we chose them as we needed a 2x lightswitch and 2x dimmer on the same block in our case. They even do modular switches and have USB charges built into the plug sockets. A bit pricey but won't break the bank.

Here is the black version: www.soholighting.com/socketsandswitches/matt-black-the-camden-collection/traditional-black-inserts

and black with copper switches: www.soholighting.com/socketsandswitches/matt-black-the-camden-collection/matt-black-brushed-brass

Lovely but expensive if you need 25 of them!

TheNoonBell · 03/07/2022 20:40

We only need 2 switches and 4 sockets luckily!

minipie · 03/07/2022 20:42

We did a mixture - fancy expensive ones in the hall and downstairs rooms, basic white plastic upstairs. (The basic white plastic ones are a lot nicer if you use screw covers and get the slightly curved ones.). I have to say, I don’t really notice any more which rooms have what…

Really wish you hadn't posted that link, I'm eyeing up switches and sockets with my calculator in hand!

SqueakyShoe · 03/07/2022 21:13

We have the Knightsbridge ones that @MsShopper linked, but in white.

They're lovely. Matte, thin, metal and no visible screw holes.

Ally345 · 04/07/2022 17:36

I got mine here - www.switch-lighting.co.uk/search?filter%5Bsearch%5D=toggle
Not as lovely as higher end but I'm quite happy with them for the price.

BastardtheCat · 29/07/2022 10:47

In your opinions, do you think switches have to match in a house?

I'm likely to get black matt for my kitchen but I quite like white toggles for elsewhere downstairs. Would this look utterly ridiculous do you think?

Saga21 · 19/10/2022 13:31

@BastardtheCat did you end up having different switches and havw you been happy with it or regretted not getting them all in the 'nicer' finish
