Plea for help from nephew (Am I right to refuse?)'

I have never rented so I am very ignorant of the procedures.

i am not as people say "comfortable " I manage !

My nephew phoned me today and asked me to be the "guarantor" for a flat. I immediately said no as with things the way they are I have no spare money from my pension.

I said no because I felt that guarantor would make me liable for his bills. Am I right? I can not do that , much as I would love to. I am quite upset as he has been flitting from rental to rental for the last 5 years .His mum is a very aggressive alcoholic that I am distancing myself from so I want to help BUT I am VERY uneasy.

Did I do the right thing ?

Thoughts please. Thank you.

Being a guarantor means that if he does not pay the rent, you have agreed to be responsible and cover the cost. Do NOT do it - no matter what the pressure.

YES - totally right to say no. Please repeat NO, if you are asked.
