Bathroom Reno cost. How much should I expect to pay?

Has anyone had their bathroom done recently?was wondering how much to expect to pay. The cheapest quote I had was 4k that’s for tiling, ripping out everything , plumbing , electrician ect. Everything needs replacing including spotlights , extractor fan ect. Also we are moving the bath, shower and towel rail to a different position. I have started a wish list and it’s looking like it will cost another 4k for materials including tiles 😬

Does 8k seem reasonable for a smallish to medium size bathroom ? I’m very near London if that makes any difference.

If anyone has photos and tips of recent bathroom Reno . I would love to see them . Many thanks

We did ours last year, we are London borders. I had budgeted for about £10k and it cost us around £7k in the end which includes everything. Labour, new toilet sink and bath, new shower attachments, tiles etc. We didn't move the position of anything and it is a tiny tiny bathroom though. Definitely would have cost more to move things around etc. Didn't do any of it ourselves, all through a builder.

MigsandTiggs Lovely bathroom. Glad to see everyone is still using grey. One of the bathroom fitters told me he is seeing less and less grey and thinks it’ll be out of fashion soon but I went with grey and white anyway !

I think it depends on the shade of grey. I avoided dark grey. My grey is quite light and with white walls you can accessorise with, yellow, lime green, pink, orange etc. My other bathrooms are completely white. Costs mount up depending on the quality, eg WiFi speaker mirror , underfloor heating!!

£7k to £8k for a small to medium sized bathroom. Full rip out but keeping fixings in roughly the same areas. This is for decent quality mid range fittings (Crosswater, Merlyn etc.). Fully tiled with Amtico flooring. You can really blow the budget on tiles.

PillowySoft Ohh.. I love that you used peach tiles. So refreshing to see ! Your bathroom is similar size to mine . Good to know it’s possible to get a lovely looking bathroom for 7-8k 😊

We're doing our bathroom at the moment, however my OH and sisters partner are fitting it all.

We will have to pay our plasterer a few hundred to sort the walls.

The suite we are using cost £1000 all in ( bath, sink, towel rail and loo) and on top of that we are buying tiles, flooring and a new shower/ enclosure.

I reckon all in its going to cost us about 3k. We're in London, would no doubt be nearer 8-10k paying tradesmen to do it.

Downside is it will take ages to finish!

Davethecat2000 Oh my , you’re brave taking it on yourself. Unfortunately I don’t have the skills or patience to do it myself

Ours was £3000 all in

The basics for a bath shower sink mirror lights was a lot cheaper buying individually - white is white after all!

We found a big mark up in ‘sets’ so brought each piece from different stores.

sink was shipped from Germany and I love it - tap was in the reduced isle and quite quirky.

We have a tap halfway down the bath with built in shower attachment.

Found discounted tiles that were also shipped over, ordered extra in case of breakages.

Tiling was the most expensive part - £500 for half tile and full by the shower - not a fan of full tiling. But those boards are cheaper.

Flooring was an off cut -

If you have time, it’s cheaper to do a lot of the leg work yourselves and ask a builder not plumber to fit it. They’ll arrange a plumber to check the work so it’s cheaper.

Are there any particular brands people love and swear by . There are so many to choose from but I’m leaning towards the German brand like grohe, Duravit and hansgrohe

I paid just over £7k last year for a full refurbishment of a small bathroom, including new bath and toilet, vanity unit, moving the bath and creating a new shower cubicle, new ceiling, flooring etc. I would expect to pay more now, maybe up to £10k I'm in the Midlands.

jaundicedoutlook · 19/06/2022 13:57

Duravit and Hansgrohe are great. Grohe slightly less so. We’ve also used Graff for shower mixer in the guest ensuite and they are really nice. The gunmetal finish needs to be cleaned a bit more than stainless steel though. Avoid black unless you love cleaning taps.

TBH we paid mid-low range for the actual suite (I love Ideal Standard but they are pricey.)

The main costs were for the plumbing, the tiling a new hot water cylinder and removing the old one from the attic. The tiler (who we have used many times and is brilliant) had to remove all the old tiles, take of crumbling plaster right to the bricks, build it all and then tile.

We've gone for this suite as our house is Edwardian and i wanted a traditional style.

It's gone up by £100 since we ordered it last week, but still think it's a reasonable price for what you get.

RampantIvy · 19/06/2022 14:26

We have just had our bathroom done. The tiling didn't need replacing, just the sanitary-ware and shower door. It cost about £4k. We need to do the floor which will cost about £200.

lugeforlife · 19/06/2022 21:33

Ours is half way through a back to brick renovation but with minimal plumbing movement. Separate bath and shower plus they are decorating too. Costing 15k from a local firm who are mid/high end. We are paying a fair few k because they are totally project managing the lot so we are paying for convenience.

If we'd have used a plumber and sourced ourselves it would have been a lot cheaper but even so I was told prices had gone up 25% over the last year or so. Don't think we've have got it much under 10k.

Daisyroseandhyacinth · 19/06/2022 21:44

How on earth do you even start with designing a new bathroom? I wouldn’t have a clue.

Kmj2018 · 19/06/2022 23:56

@Daisyroseandhyacinth i find Pinterest a good place to start. You can go down the bathroom designer route and they will plan everything out for you, with floor plans and everything. As someone has already said this will likely to cost 25% more but is the easier route as they will project manage everything for you. Alternatively If you find a good bathroom fitter yourself they can help you with the buying and measuring of everything. And working out how many tiles are needed ect. I’ve just created a wish list on Victoria plumbing and sent it to my bathroom fitter to check everything is ok and he has everything I’m he needs to start.

@Daisyroseandhyacinth there are also online tools you can use to map out your bathroom

I have just finished an extension and kitchen refurbishment and I would never again use a company that project-manages. The main guy adds his 20% mark up on everything. His contractors' labour, all materials, all costs. And then he adds VAT on top. So close to 50% more than the actual cost. Convenience is great but only worth it for first-time renovators (like us) or if your jobs are so high-paid that you won't notice.

glamourousindierockandroll · 20/06/2022 06:00

@Kmj2018 thank you!

Baxdream · 20/06/2022 06:16

It really depends on what you want done. We went for a simple white suite with panelling and it's cost 9600 but that included a new heating tank so we can run two showers at the same time.
We haven't panelled all the walls and we've opted to paint the walls ourselves to save money.

We had our ensuite done last year and prices have gone up in that short amount of time!

Cyclingforcake · 20/06/2022 06:23

Just done our en suite. Think it’s is cost 5.5k in the end. But we reused our bathroom suite to keep costs down. And did the decorating ourselves. Otherwise it would have been newer 7k. We’re in Yorkshire.

CaptainBeakyandhisband · 20/06/2022 06:31

I used to say that it should be about £3k plus the suite and tiles etc, and that could be anything from £6-8k all in for a family bathroom (you could definitely pay more). As things have gone up so much £4k for the work doesn’t seem unreasonable now.

as for the suite, there is a huge variation in cost depending on what you choose, eg anything with built in units is going to be £££; part tiled will obviously be cheaper than full tiles etc.

we used a website called QS Supplies for a lot of our bathroom stuff. Huge discounts but terrible customer service, so great unless there is an issue. I would use them again though tbf.

crossstitchingnana · 20/06/2022 06:33

£5k about a year ago. New sink, shower and loo. Also moved towel rail and tiles over sink. Also painted.

JuneJubilee · 20/06/2022 06:38

£8k sounds about right for a smallish bathroom now. Mine was that pre covid, but I did most of the stripping out myself and the painting afterwards.

it took me ages to find tiles I loved (wanted a light/mid grey Matt not too small) and I still LOVE them, I had an accident last year & had a lot of rehabilitation workers come in the house & almost all of them said how lovely the bathroom is.

choose what you love.

it's a lot of money & hard to see how, I know, but unfortunately it is what it is, especially when you have to pay for trades.

mMum having to accept my kitchen is going to cost a lot more now, post covid/Ukraine & because of my accident I'm now unable to do most of what I planned to do myself. It's crap, but it is what it is 🙄

best of luck!

oh and my tiles are high (but not full height) around 3 sides of the bath and half height around the rest, walls painted white. Floor same tiles.
