Hi, my and my wife are looking to move to Witham as seems to be an affordable option than St Albans and has an easy commute to London where we work. We found a house we love in Witham. It is very close to Witham fire station on Hatfield road. Since, we are not from the area but picked this primarily because its in the cachment area of the two outstanding schools and the grammer shool in Chelmsford.
Could anyone please comment how good or bad the area is? (rough, anti social behaviour, drugs etc..?)
Any comments/feedback will be greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't live in Witham - it's not a particularly nice town area, quite a lot of London overspill estates built in the 1970s. Much nicer villages a bit further out like Kelvedon/Feering if you need to be on the train line, or Coggeshall, Earls Colne if you can be a bit further out.

Ditto, I wouldn't move to Witham. It is rough, drug issues, all the things you are worried about. We lived there a year as couldn't wait to move out. Chelmsford nicer.

How sad that Witham seems to have changed so much since my grandparents lived there 60 years ago - they had a charming little cottage (with an outside loo down the garden) and I loved visiting them there and going for walks on the disused railway line behind their house. There was an antique dealer called Mr Smellie who had a big shed full of bric-a-brac for sale, and a lovely sweet shop where I used to spend my pocket money. Sorry to derail the thread a bit, but seeing Witham mentioned brought back some great memories :)
