Comfy mid-century sofa recommendations

We are just finishing our extension and going to ditch some very comfy but really hideous hand-me-down sofas we have had for ten years and replace with new. Love the mid-century look but want some comfy squish still. Not a massive budget mainly because we have a cat who scratches a bit (but thankfully teens so not to many spills anymore) - but want to get it right as we spend most evenings stretched out on sofa. So - if you have a really comfy mid-century style
sofa which you have bought in the last few years, where did you get it? Thanks!
.

We have a French connection zinc one from DFS. Got it about 7 years ago and it's lasted really well so far. Think it's pretty comfy - I slept on it for 10 nights recently when DH had covid and I didn't want to share a bed with him!

BrambleyHedge · 06/06/2022 20:41

I have seen the Zinc and like it so that is good to hear. I was worried it might not wear well. Do you know which cushion you have? Think there are two choices. Thanks

We got a lovely one from West elm. I frequently sleep on it and it's super comfortable... Will try to find a link.

NOT sofology - awful quality and poor customer service. We've had good luck with Next sofas. Ikea have some nice midcentury styles, like this one

bilbodog · 07/06/2022 12:49

I like tetrad sofas - john lewis sells some.

We have an IKEA one very similar to this, it’s HUGELY comfy. I think we’ve had it about 5/6 years and it’s not showing any signs of wear

We have the gplan one from John Lewis - got a good deal in Black Friday sale. Have had it 18 months and looks good as new! It's a v short velvet so our cat is unable to get his claws into it which is ideal as he destroyed the covers on our last one..

PickAChew · 07/06/2022 12:55

We had that sort of style of sofa from IKEA and the arms came off. We actually had 2 because one was replaced under warranty within 2 weeks of it being delivered for the same thing. Replaced the replacement within 2 years.

Our g-plan sofa bed has stood up to lounging teenager pretty well, though.

SorrelForbes · 07/06/2022 13:01

GPlan! We have one each of these:

I have the gplan 59

NightmareSlashDelightful · 07/06/2022 13:21

Have a look at sites like Vinterior for a vintage one. Often they have been refurbished/reupholstered. Look for G Plan, Ercol or Parker Knoll.

Or try Soho Home, their style is very louche and Deco-to-mid-50s I’d say.

BrambleyHedge · 07/06/2022 19:09

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Feel I must look at Gplan and JL (I am familiar with some of these brands as live in former chair manufacturing town but for some reason didn't think of them for sofas ...) May consider IKEA but we've had an IKEA house for 20 years and may want a change!

... but isnt the g plan about 2 k ..... !

PickAChew · 07/06/2022 19:31

We got ours ex display.

Persipan · 07/06/2022 19:54

I have a vintage Ercol studio couch that I bought in a right state. I sanded it down, made new covers for it and rewebbed it, and while it was a lot of work it was totally worth it and cost me a fraction of what a new one goes for. It's long enough to be able to lie right down on it (I'm lying on it right now!) and essentially cat-proof. I really love it!

BrambleyHedge · 07/06/2022 20:25

Yes Gplan may be a bit much...not quite £2k but close 😫

West elm looks nice too ...wonder if should stretch my budget a bit

Def worth waiting for the West elm sale. I've looked and they don't seem to do mine anymore which is a shame as it looks slightly less hefty and more mid century than their current ones. But I still like some of them! Ours is a teal velvet with those splay legs. Three seater. V elegant but also comfy.

This I think is an image like ours.

SollaSollew · 08/06/2022 14:26

We have one of these www.citysofa.co.uk/collections/3-seater/products/scott-3-seater-sofa-grey-1 which is very comfy indeed. I did want the made.com one but the lead time was 12 weeks and these are available in 2 at very reasonable prices.

SollaSollew · 08/06/2022 14:29

Although it's probably only mid-century adjacent!

OldSpeclkledHen · 08/06/2022 23:29

@NightmareSlashDelightful you are naughty! Just sent me looking (dreaming) vinterior 🙈🙈

SausageAndCash · 09/06/2022 16:04

I have the Zinc sofa, with the firm upgraded cushions.

It is indestructible, very high quality for the price.
