Has anybody ever fitted half a kitchen and fitted the island once their side return extension has happened?

I really want a new kitchen but the extension has not happened due to various reasons. I don't think I can wait! I want a floor to ceiling thingy on the main wall and an island unit facing it (with sink).

Would it be a crazy thing to do? There is electric/plumbing etc on both sides and I could cope with a small change in level if need be. Have I overlooked a major reason why this should not be done ...such as 'the installed half will inevitably get wrecked by the time the other half is in'?

My big concern is that the kitchen would go out of production or the colour/finish wouldn't match. I would but the whole lot in one go and store the bits you can't install until the build?

Can you have a temporary sink somewhere until the extension is built?
