I've just cleaned the sink trap in my bathroom sink.

And I think I may have just destroyed a colonising army of alien lifeforms.

I used to think I was generally OK at keeping my home clean and tidy. The state of the pipes prove otherwise. 🤢

The one to watch is the new modern shower tray traps, they go absolutely gopping within a few days, I keep the cheapest description of dishwasher tablets next to the shower I clean the plug and then fill the trap with DW tablets and the next long shower generally does the job for me.

I am the only person in this house who cleans the shower trap. It is effing disgusting on a Sunday morning

dudsville · 05/06/2022 10:59

I think the dishwasher tablet is an amazing idea @FinallyFluid !!!

I don’t have an obvious way to remove the plug to do this (ie no screw).

tried putting hair removal cream down there once… never again.

Any good ways to keep this clean without being able to pull it apart?

I just pour bleach down mine, I can take the shower one out but look like a bit of work for the sink.

In that case just put soda crystals down it, cheap as chips from Tesco et al and really good for cleaning the dishwasher and washing machine on high heat settings.

You've inspired me OP, this on on my to-do list today. I was out looking for a decent brush thingy to poke down the drain hole yesterday. Every time I brush my teeth I can smell the waste pipe Envy I blame it on liquid soap, it seems to gunk up the pipes over time.

We went on holiday to a cottage in 2020. Used wet room which flooded the hall outside into the living area. Shower wasn't draining. The trap had huge handfuls of hair in it. Obviously never cleaned in months! We suggested the owner let the cleaner know. We always clean a shower trap when we self cater.

ChiswickFlo · 05/06/2022 11:13

I'm gonna try the dishwasher tablet idea

Oh, I hadn't thought of the liquid soap issue. Hmmm.

I think I'll be trying soda crystals to keep the pipes clear - I wonder if that will dissolve the gunk.
