Number 13

Saw a thread earlier about things which would put you off buying a house. Just curious, would the house number 13 be a deal breaker? Only asking as we live at number 13 and will be looking to move, didn’t bother me but how do others feel?

It wouldn't bother me L.

I sold a house which was number 8 and had a lot of interest from Chinese buyers so I would agree that some people are superstitious.

QueenOfThorns · 04/06/2022 17:09

To be honest, I probably wouldn’t even notice. I’d be too busy making sure that there was off-street parking and a bath!

TizerorFizz · 04/06/2022 17:11

Some people ask for renumbering to (eg) 12A or 11A. It wouldn’t bother me though.

Defender90 · 04/06/2022 17:13

I live in 13 it was weird at the time as I was used to there never being a 13, always 11A and always thought I was superstitious but it was no more than a passing thought.

It wouldn't bother me on a personal level, however I would think twice about buying it if I was planning on re-selling it at any point in the future as these things matter to some people, so cuts out some of your audience.

I speak having been burned by buying a house on an old coal mine. It didn't bother me, the coal board say if anything ever goes wrong they cover it, but it did matter to a lot of my potential buyers when I came to sell it.

13 is my favourite number, so wouldn't put me off.

AmberLynn1536 · 04/06/2022 18:01

Number 13 is considered very lucky in Feng Shui it means ‘assured growth’ and ‘definitely vibrant’. It seems a strange superstition to me, we were all 13 years old once! It wouldn’t even register to me if a house was number 13.

I wouldn't even notice

Our road doesn’t have a 13. Apparently it was thought the house wouldn’t sell when the estate was designed in the 1960s/70s. The odd side goes 9, 11, 15 …

Wouldn't bother me at all

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 04/06/2022 21:17

It wouldn't bother me, but it would be interesting to know whether it holds down prices or makes houses harder to sell. Number 13 on our road sold before the board had even gone up recently, so it didn't seem to bother their buyers . I have heard that Chinese people consider the number 4 (and other numbers which contain it) to be very unlucky as it sounds similar to the word for death.

Hallyup89 · 05/06/2022 15:10

We lived at number 15 which was a modern end of terrace with number 11 next door. I always thought it should be number 13 and would never have bothered me.

On our street now, which is 30 years old, number 13 is missing, but on the next identical street they have 11, 11A and 15. Bonkers, but house developers know people are superstitious and want the best price for the property. If changing or missing out a number does that, then it's no skin off their nose.

FlamingNuts · 05/06/2022 19:13

There is a new build estate near me and some roads have 11 then 15 but others have 11, 13, 15.

No idea why it has both.

Mydogisagentleman · 06/06/2022 09:24

Not remotely. Our lovely house has that number

carefullycourageous · 06/06/2022 09:37

Apparently it does put a few people off, but no more than other things. For example, I didn't view a house that had a dog poo bin very near the front gate. The house sold very quickly.

Don't worry about it.

Sometimes it is if someone buys early and asks for it not to be 13.

We sold a number 13 house recently, it sold on the second day on the market at £20k over asking price, and we had about 15 viewers over the two days so it didn't seem to be any kind of an issue.

Roselilly36 · 06/06/2022 16:42

We moved last year, I wouldn’t even consider viewing a number 13 property, let alone buying one to live in.
