For me it's open plan type kitchen and living rooms. Like a bedsit!?Shock

@DashboardConfessional I agree. We went to look at some new builds recently, out of curiosity really. They’re built with a 1930s aesthetic so appealed to me more than most new builds but as you say they were mainly garage. A 4 bed detached house was basically a living room and kitchen/diner. My 3 bed semi has more downstairs space.

Yes, exactly that. We're already in a terraced townhouse with a lounge diner and medium kitchen so we'd be buying for more living space.

Grin me too!

This^^
Been kept awake by my selfish neighbour partying again last night...
I dream of a cottage in the Highlands, 20 miles from my nearest neighbour...

Long narrow houses- I've had 3 now of various ages that are double fronted and I just love 'the width'

No open plan kitchens into lounges (been there done that)

Not keen on just floorboards on stairs and upstairs- done that too (but is changeable I guess) it's very clattery

Parking issues

Terraces or townhouses ( husband needs to play audio and video in daytime as part of his job)

Loft rooms with no bathroom if they 'need' to be used as a bedroom- ok if used for storage or a very very occasional stay over

Conservatories - had them a few times and never used them -and if open to a room can make the other room cold

Neighbours who clearly don't give a shit about their house

We moved into a house with a lot of the things people are saying are off putting.
Front door opens onto the living room , stairs in the living room , only one bathroom downstairs , on street parking with permit. Hopefully when the time comes to sell we will have earned brownie points with having the leilandi trees cut down in the North facing garden!!

WinterDeWinter · 11/06/2022 18:28

Haha us too @Noseylittlemoo and in fact we were very happy there. I think if you love city living you learn to cope with all these disasters ;-)

Noseylittlemoo · 11/06/2022 19:32

Yes @WinterDeWinter we love our place too! It's our home and it works for us. Most of my life I've lived somewhere with 1 bathroom and have never suffered any accidents or disasters! And I'm much better at parallel parking than my friends with driveways 🤣

Haha yep I've developed excellent parallel parking skills on our narrow Victorian, permit parking-only street...!

We also have a (the horrors) single downstairs bathroom, stairs into the dining room, and no garden. While I'm glad we're moving next week for many reasons, I have happily lived here! You learn to live in the space you've got :)

Having just bought a house recently, ours were:

  • High gloss kitchen (unless we knew we were renovating)
  • Open plan
  • Near a main road (got cats)
  • Shit storage options (big built in cupboards, boarded out loft, etc?)
  • New build
None of these are absolute dealbreakers except new builds and main road - we'd ignore an ugly kitchen or open plan space for an otherwise gorgeous house in the right area. But that's what put us off properties.
