When we bought our house last year our 'no go' list was -

Parking issues
Open plan
Needed to have more than one toilet
No busy roads

We bought a lovely house on a cul de sac which ticked all the boxes, we were willing to overlook the fact the whole place was grey and have been injecting colour in every room 😁

Cuckoo48 · 05/06/2022 20:42

Smell of dog (irrational I know, but it was the first thing to come to mind)
Original character ripped out
Unattractive windows and doors
Lack of decent garden (in terms of size, north-facing aspect or one heavily shadowed by next-door's trees or too much concrete which is expensive to get rid of).
Unkempt neighbouring houses

SCH20 · 05/06/2022 20:43

Any property that's listed. Our last house was beautiful in a lovely village but essentially grade II listed. It made trying to do anything, from replacing knackered guttering to a new front door, prohibitively complicated and expensive.

Collinsro · 05/06/2022 20:49

I'm in my 30s and still saving for first house which seems an impossible goal. I'd be happy for anywhere I can afford within a half an hours drive from work (can't wfh).

Mellowyellow222 · 05/06/2022 20:52

things I can’t change -

non off street parking

Tiny garden / overlooked garden

busy road

shared spaces / management company

ZebraLyghts · 05/06/2022 20:55

Haha, everybody's 'no-nos' apply to my last house: shared driveway, (shared with evil nightmare neighbour), no downstairs loo, rough area, overlooked by loads of houses, stairs in living room, no hallway, no utility room, tiny garden, gravelled garden, busy road, doors and windows needed replacing, noisy neighbours with outside bar/music all hours, barking dog next door, it goes on! I'm so glad we moved

fetchacloth · 05/06/2022 21:13

Deal breakers for me are:
No off road parking available
Shared driveway
No side entrance
North facing back garden
Single glazed windows
No central heating
Open plan living area/kitchen
Rear garden without grass
Tall trees
Busy main road
Dog or cigarette smells
Neighbours with junk in gardens
Trampolines in neighboring gardens

Staffy1 · 05/06/2022 21:21

Culdesac set up with bratty children in the road, or potential for bratty children in the road.
On an estate where all the houses are boring red brick and identical.
Terraced.
Train track right next to the garden.
No garden or paved garden.
No parking, or parking not within easy sight from the house.
No front garden, so door straight onto pavement.
On a busy, noisy road.
Kitchen too small for either fridge or washing machine.

somewhereovertherain · 05/06/2022 21:30

Only issues that are deal breakers for us is no parking and no view everything is fixable. but that’s why we live where we live. We bought our house for £285k / needs loads doing but lots sorted with a bloody good clean.

our next door neighbour put house up from £650k.

wentworthinmate · 05/06/2022 21:44

Trampoline or kids toys in the neighbours garden at least two houses either side.

wentworthinmate · 05/06/2022 21:46

Oh and anywhere within half a mile of a school (because of the parking and noise at drop off and collection).

ozymandiusking · 05/06/2022 21:52

Dirty interior, untended garden, no downstairs loo, signs of damp, no off street parking.

1ittlegreen · 05/06/2022 21:56

For me if a house is haunted it's a no go. I don't love Victorian houses either.

TheGetaway · 05/06/2022 22:08

Formulaic, soulless housing estate type

Plastic windows, fake period features. Cars parked everywhere and/or no-where to park. No wildlife except bloody pigeons. Street lights. I could never live anywhere with streetlights. Laminate or vinyl flooring.

And me!

I need somewhere to retreat to. And I would have been stuffed during lockdown without a room to work in where I could close the door and shut everyone else out.

We use one of the bedrooms as a study so that isn't a problem. The 2 lounge rooms are separated by an entryway and a kitchen so quite separate. I hate enclosed kitchens that would probably put me off.

Elle8344 · 05/06/2022 22:42

MoreShit123 · 04/06/2022 10:04

Any kind of noise whatsoever. People are cunts. I need an island.

Yes!

GreenShadow · 05/06/2022 22:44

Oh dear.
Several of these apply to our house 🙁
Only one bathroom ...
...and it's downstairs
Kitchen accessed via other rooms.

But we have amazing views, plenty of parking, big garden and good sized rooms. Hopefully they will compensate when we come to (eventually ) sell.

Audioslaw · 05/06/2022 22:46

My instant nos are I need a bath in my bathroom so if someone has taken one out to put a new shower room in I'd never view as such a waste of money to rip it straight out again.

I'd rather have an old bathroom that needs doing and update it myself.

I HATE offers over. Won't view on principle. Just put an asking price

Wiseoldself2022 · 05/06/2022 22:48

NellesVilla · 04/06/2022 09:46

  • bathroom off kitchen- yuck!
  • bedroom off a another bedroom
  • the only bathroom off a bedroom
…in truth I have never owned a home and would actually be honoured/grateful/delighted to do so

I had that once, during my renting days - bathroom was off the kitchen- it was a nightmare! 😔

Blossomandbee · 05/06/2022 22:55

No parking
Open plan stairs
Only one toilet/bathroom
Bad garden
Next to any kind of eyesore/noise problem
No garage

Missymare · 05/06/2022 23:24

Shared drive, being overlooked, new housing estates, no parking

TranquilBlue · 05/06/2022 23:25

Ours too, but we still love it and so would someone else if we ever did decide to sell.

It may not be everyone’s idea of a lovely home, but there will always be someone else who likes it enough to buy it, it might just take a little longer to sell than the list after list of identikit properties on Rightmove etc.

PrinnyPree · 05/06/2022 23:48

It would be the things I dislike in my current house, noisy neighbour (I would pay alot of attention to neighbours and have a few visits and look put for red flags) small kitchen that only has room for an undercounter fridge, small bedrooms (I have to walk sideways round the foot of my bed to squeeze past my sliding door wardrobe)

When I look at houses that are well above my budget (whilst I daydream about a small lottery win whilst browsing rightmove) I really dislike ones that have been rendered white and have dark grey window frames and astro turf. The interiors are inevitably white and grey thoughout too sometimes with black showers and taps. They look so sterile and unloved.
