3 Months On , Chain Still Not Complete. Do I Wait?

My offer was accepted 3 months ago and there are currently 4 in my chain (me, my seller, their seller and their seller) with the one at the top still looking.

I'm in rented, house sold last year and I have been very patient so far as I know how stressful house selling and buying is and I haven't wanted to put pressure on my seller.

I'm just starting to get a bit worried that this could go on and on and that as more people join the chain there is more chance something will go wrong somewhere and it will all fall apart anyway.

Has anyone been in this position and what did you do?

Personally, I have never stopped looking until the chain is complete. Not aggressively, but I keep my eye on the market in case something chain free I like as much / prefer comes on. I just don't tell any other parties. After 3 months, I think I'd be letting the agent know I was going to start looking round.

How long has the one at the top been looking?

@Aniita I have started keeping my eye on Rightmove again but so far I haven't seen anything that really grabs me. I would be loathe to get involved in another chain so I'm only really looking at chain free or new houses now.

I was wondering if I should let the agent know I'm looking and ask them to ask if anyone would be willing to break the chain?

Ones at the top have been looking for about 3 weeks as far as I know.

I almost thought you were describing us then (us being the ones at top of V small chain (just 2 below us) looking for a house since Feb).
Only you know what your local market is like and how keen you are on this particular house.

Our market is as dead as a dead thing and anything suitable hoes massively over asking. We’ve offered loads but miss out to people with much deeper pockets than us. We’ve told our buyers we’ll rent but we can’t get one of those either.
Thankfully they are very keen and will hold out for us. They have said that they’ll let their 1st time buyers find something else if they can’t wait any longer, as they’ll sell again If they lose them. We’re happy to wait too, given we’ve not found anything yet.

It’s crap all round but what else can you do if it’s a slow market?
