Renovating 70s fireplace

So I need to decide what to do with our fireplace. It is huge and dominates the room. Neither DH or I like it. The exposed brickwork is not particularly nice. The pointing between the bricks sticks out like a v formation. it's all been messily done with mortar left on the stone and in other places it's been dripped all over the stone. The beams aren't actually wood but wood effect concrete.

What do you think we should do?

You could plaster over it. Put a new mantle in if using wood check it’s far enough away from the stove. Turn the alcoves into cupboards
I think it would look better if the actual fire place was bigger
