Does anyone live in or know the village of Buriton near Petersfield? Any thoughts or feedback particularly in terms of community and transport into Petersfield

Many moons ago I lived near by in a tiny hamlet, I didn't know Buriton but I did enjoy living in that area. A lot of friendship groups were made at the local pubs, but that may have just been me and that time of my life! Good luck!

friendlycat · 27/04/2022 14:17

Public transport isn’t great between the two. There’s a bus that runs every two hours and finishes early late afternoon. Easy to get a taxi from Petersfield Station though.

Nice pub in Buriton, though in all honesty it’s not the best food in the area but popular and busy. I think it’s no doubt got a good community feel though I understand from locals there’s a bit of a clique between the large properties there that doesn’t necessarily extend to some of the smaller properties in the approaching lane!

I live in the market town you mention and there’s no way I would live in Buriton without a car. The other thing to note is rural taxis are expensive, bus routes limited and often don’t run midday and finish early like 5.30pm. Even popular routes say Midhurst etc finish at 7pm.

Do you drive as this makes all the difference? I drive and moved here from SW London and it’s rural in amongst The South Downs National Park but decent train line.

What are you wanting from the location as rural might suit you?

KobaniDaughters · 27/04/2022 15:54

@friendlycat this is really helpful Thankyou - the bus worries me as I need my DC to get to TPS Independantly and I was hoping the local bus would allow for that - I would be moving into Petersfield itself but there’s just nothing available to rent to suit our needs

OP posts:
friendlycat · 27/04/2022 19:01

I've just looked up the bus route for you it's the number 94 and it would get your DC to TPS as the route starts from Buriton at 8.10am and allows for school hours. Take a look at the route as apparently there are 3 routes this bus takes and one of the routes will cover you for school.

I agree renting in Petersfield would be better but it there is nothing on the market then obviously it's a problem. But you do know how small Buriton is I presume? Have you looked at Liss as a rental option as Liss is bigger and children still go to TPS from Liss? Liss also has a mainline railway station and is a much bigger village with amenities?

friendlycat · 27/04/2022 19:14

Have you seen that Grenehurst Way property - central Petersfield - that was added yesterday for rent? 3 bedrooms. It's actually a good price for Petersfield.

KobaniDaughters · 27/04/2022 20:38

Thanks for your responses @friendlycat yes were looking at Liss, Liphook and Haslemere as well as the villages in catchment serviced by buses!

i haven’t - we need a detached 3/4 bed (if 3 bed we a proper space for an office as we both work from home)

OP posts:
friendlycat · 27/04/2022 21:24

Oh ok. The house I suggested is too small then sorry. It’s only 3 beds.

I don’t know if you are aware of The Petersfield Facebook forum. It’s called Petersfield Pulse and easy to register with. It might be worth you posting on there for a rental. It’s a super helpful forum. Worth a try.

KobaniDaughters · 27/04/2022 21:30

Thankyou - I think I’m on a Petersfield community FB group but will check that one out too!

OP posts:
BlazingFlames · 27/04/2022 22:24

You'll need a car as public transport is v poor. Not much going on there. What about Liss?

KobaniDaughters · 27/04/2022 23:21

@BlazingFlames we’re looking everywhere easily commutable to TPS so already have Liss, Liphook, Haslemere and villages serviced by the bus on our radar but it’s very slim (ie none) pickings

OP posts:
CockingASnook · 28/04/2022 07:20

I live in the area. The bus service isn’t great but it’s definitely possible to cycle into Petersfield from Buriton on safe cycle paths in about 20 minutes. Obviously not ideal for going shopping but fine for going to school.

friendlycat · 28/04/2022 09:30

There is a house for rent with Winkworth just outside Petersfield in the village of Stroud. 5 bedroom detached (plus study) at £2750 per month.

Stroud is on the bus 67 route which is far more frequent as this bus runs from Petersfield to Winchester.

KobaniDaughters · 28/04/2022 15:59

@CockingASnook that was going to be another question actually about cycling (especially for me getting to the station to get to London for work) so that’s good to hear

@friendlycat we took a look at that house and it’s right on the busy road which makes it a no with our cat unfortunately

LemonDrizzleSlice · 28/04/2022 16:03

I know it. Quite a few children get the bus to TPS each morning. And back, I guess!

I wouldn't live there without a car. The cycle route isn't bad, you can do the quite lane or the wider, busier road out of the village.

LemonDrizzleSlice · 28/04/2022 16:04

Also there are now two pubs in Buriton, the second one has reopened as The Nest. As well as the more established Five Bells.

KobaniDaughters · 28/04/2022 16:21

Thanks @LemonDrizzleSlice !

does anyone know anything about the broadband speeds?!

OP posts:
LemonDrizzleSlice · 28/04/2022 16:26

Broadband is fine, I think. We had no problem streaming stuff.

KobaniDaughters · 28/04/2022 17:03

Great - DH and I both work from home and he’s on constant video calls to and from the US and I’m on constant voice calls too

OP posts:
LemonDrizzleSlice · 28/04/2022 18:51

Phone reception can be patchy, but with wifi mobile calls you're fine.

Loving that your niche question about a tiny village has had so many answers. Good old Mumsnet! 😆

KobaniDaughters · 28/04/2022 19:18

@LemonDrizzleSlice I know!!

OP posts:
LemonDrizzleSlice · 28/04/2022 19:52

Just to reiterate an earlier poster, definitely join Petersfield Pulse. There may be a Buriton page as well.

friendlycat · 28/04/2022 19:59

I love Petersfield Pulse.

But it does make me laugh when some of the locals get very uptight about any new restaurants opening in the town!

Ooh, the Waterstones drama! 😱

KobaniDaughters · 28/04/2022 20:57

Oh I’ve been following the Waterstones drama!!

OP posts:
friendlycat · 28/04/2022 21:59

The Waterstones drama indeed 😂

The latest being the owners of The Spread Eagle in Liss buying the old Willow dress shop and planning permission for a new restaurant! At least most are enthusiastic about this though obviously some not as usual.

Fabulous I say especially if they will be serving their legendary burgers 🍔.
