What’s the market like in Winchester?

If you’re buying/selling a house in Winchester at the moment, what’s the market like? It seems like there’s very little coming on to the market. Are houses going for over asking price? Any other advice for a potential buyer in the area?

Expensive.
You need deep pockets it seems.
I've noticed anything coming on remotely nice gets snapped up quick.
Several properties however have been stagnant though and now reduced.
I moved over to the area in September 2021 but have been watching since July as I knew I had a permanent position to start in Hampshire since then.
The new-builds in the Kings Barton estate are selling like hotcakes despite the fact its a 2000 home development which put me off. This is in comparison to another new-build estates in the Hampshire area.

Thanks @Somanyquestions1984 . Anyone else with recent experience?

We bought a small Victorian end of terrace last year that needs significant reconfiguring which we will have to save up for. We didn’t have a huge budget for the area but were lucky enough to make a cash offer of asking price straight away. The vendor still took a little time to decide whether to show it to more people. Fair enough, but it was scary.
I watch the market out of curiosity and some things in certain price brackets and certain areas go instantly for asking or more, but there are also a lot of things that agents put on for stupid amounts to seemingly try their luck.

What is it you’re looking for and and where exactly? Prices seem to have gone up here consistently but those things make a huge difference. I’ve noticed newer, larger homes much further out of town have gone up much more than I’d ever have expected. Nothing seems good value, honestly, even though it’s home to me and I can’t and won’t move.

Thanks @mrsmartins85 we’re looking for something in town, it doesn’t need to be huge or updated but my husband would like off street parking or (ideally) a garage, which seems to be tricky. Were coming from south London and it seems that we’ll have to settle for a much smaller house than we have here, which I wasn’t expecting!

Do you have to be in Winchester? You can get a lot more for your money a few miles south in Chandlers Ford for example. The schools are still very good and it’s only a few minutes drive to Winchester. If you have to be in town the prices are very high and off street parking at a premium. We did manage to rent a council garage a street away from our house when we lived in a terraced house in town so that may be worth looking into. We’re now in a village just south of Winchester and hardly anything is up for sale at the moment.
