Lefty/diverse/community minded towns/villages near Manchester...

I'm relocating to the Manchester area. I LOVE Levenshulme but my son has asthma and I'm worried about air quality so I've decided to look for somewhere rural-ish just outside... I need somewhere within 30 mins drive of Middleton. I know I won't get all of these but can anyone recommend anywhere that meets ANY of the following criteria: strong community/left wing/diverse/good for toddlers. Could Ramsbottom and nearby villages or Littleborough fit the bill? Anywhere else? Thanks so much!

Hey it’s been a while but did you go?

Hebden Bridge is the obvious answer, if you're happy with a 41 minute drive to Middleton. Lesbian capital of the UK, reputedly.
