How to put a longer screw thread on a metal drawer handle?

I have some vintage handles which have a fixed (as in welded on) screw thread of 13mm which is far too short. I need a screw thread about 35mm long. How can I achieve this? I believe the old thread is brass.

Connecting nuts? They do all different sizes

Connecting nuts wouldn't work because I'd have to drill a much wider hole through the cupboard door & there'd be nothing to hold the front of the handle in place.

Could you not put it part the way through and just drill wider from the back and fit the connector to the extra post and screw in from the back side so the front hole is still small?
Or if there are any metal work places near you, maybe the loop could be opened and a longer post put on/longer post welded on?

I had this problem (though not so extremely short). We countersunk the nut from the back as pp suggested. Depends how sturdy the wood is I suppose. Lovely handles!

You just need to counterbore the hole to the required depth from the inside. You can also get caps to go over the hole to make it nice and neat on the inside.

It looks like countersinking may be the way to go, though I'm trying to avoid it as I'll have to drill more than halfway through the thickness of the door. I'm also looking into putting a longer thread on if that's possible..

Could you use something 'ike the female part of an inter screw, like this: www.screwfix.com/p/inter-screws-m4-x-10-pack/65152

Of course, that's only possible if you can find one in a thread matching the old handles!
