Convert table lamp into a dimmer

Has anyone tried converting their table lamp into a dimmer? A quick search online shows me that I can buy a plug-in dimmer but they are generally unreliable. I also don't want to change the wall plug into a dimmer, so the only option left seems to be somehow converting the existing on/off switch on the lamp into a dimmer. Does that work? Do you need an electrician? Confused

Not sure if it’s what you mean… but you can get a dimmer plug which plugs in to the power socket. Your lamp plugs in to the dimmer plug. There’s a dial on the dimmer plug which adjusts the brightness of the lamp’s bulb.

The reliability issues might me down to what you intend to dim — An LED or a filament bulb.

I have one which dims a filament bulb and it works very well. If you want to dim an LED you will need to select the right kind of dimming technology; leading or trailing edge. Maybe this is where the unreliability reviews stem from.

@SomethigWentBang Ah I see thank you. The one I wanted was a led bulb actually. I'll check the dim type Smile
