Is stripy stair carpet really out of fashion now?

Starting to make plans to redecorate our tiny, dark stairs and landing.

Due to the way the extension was done by the previous owners there’s zero natural light, and very little free wall space to add interest with pictures etc.

My plan was to do the walls in a light colour (maybe F&B ammonite) and then get a patterned carpet. I was thinking a beige check/tartan but there’s not much choice and a lot of them are ££££.

Are stripes really overdone at this stage?

What does it matter if they are in fashion or not - they are your stairs, decorate them as you wish?

After years of renting I just want something that looks nice and that I’m going to be happy with for a few years.

I have a tendency to go for the cheapest/easiest option (in this case stripey carpet) and always regret it.

They're a bit meh, always have been. However they're your stairs, decorate them how you like.

Just carpeted our stairs in a speckled carpet. Available cheaply, not totally plain, shows fewer marks than plain and harder to get bored with than a pattern. Personally I dislike striped stair carpet but each to their own and as has been said, they are your stairs.

Blossomtoes · 18/04/2022 12:36

I love striped stair carpet. If you do too, just have it.

imaeasteregg · 18/04/2022 12:38

I think it depends on the house, if it's the only way of adding colour it can look good

loopydoopy200 · 18/04/2022 12:46

We have just purchased a striped carpet for our stairs. Admittedly I didn't want stripes but we couldn't decide on any thing else that matched our paint without looking too fussy/ old fashioned or just too
Way out there. I love it

Unless you’re going to be selling tickets to the general public for a stair viewing, it doesn’t really matter if their in fashion or not, it’s whether you like them. You’re going to be the one seeing them everyday!! If you like the look go for it.

Retrievemysanity · 18/04/2022 12:50

We recently totally renovated our house and got a striped carpet. I absolutely love it!

merryhouse · 18/04/2022 13:02

If there's no natural light and very little space for interest, I wouldn't choose grey and brown as my base colours.

DappledThings · 19/04/2022 16:39

We got a striped carpet on our stairs last year. I have no idea if it is fashionable or not but I like it.

Chaoslatte · 19/04/2022 16:47

Has it ever been particularly fashionable? Patterned carpets remind me of hotel corridors. Sisal/sea grass type thing is nice on stairs. Unless it’s really dark, in which case just paint the edge of each step in glow in the dark paint Grin

We have filthy young kids so although I love that jute stuff, it would show off every splash of orange juice and smeared chocolate button that came anywhere near it 🤣

I love these - they are not cheap but look lovely.

WellTidy · 19/04/2022 17:24

We put a crucial trading stair carpet mississippi premium in khaki down last year and we love it. Would look great with ammonite.

PurpleToeNail · 20/04/2022 08:03

Paint your stairs & ditch the carpet! Super easy to clean then.

RichardsGear · 20/04/2022 08:09

I've read before with dark stairways it's a good idea to embrace it and use a dark or bold colour on the walls. Trying to make it feel brighter using a light coloured paint can make it look dingy apparently.
I know that's nothing to do with striped carpets but just another option perhaps? Dark walls and plain carpet?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 20/04/2022 08:16

I love stripey stair carpets !

RichardsGear · 20/04/2022 08:18

Hmmm I've been looking and can't find anything to back up what I've just posted! Maybe it was more to do with hallways rather than stairs and landings. Just ignore me and go with your stripey carpet. The khaki and cream one posted by PP looks nice.
Have you got any wall space on the stairs to hang mirrors?

Ariela · 20/04/2022 08:20

Oh now I saw some stairs online the other day, and they were lit by LEDS . Looked spectacular. No carpet though. You might want carpet to deaden the noise.

SugarDatesandPistachios · 20/04/2022 09:44

I think a narrow, striped runner always looks good. Will be timeless.

Example

PhileasPhilby · 20/04/2022 12:03

It isn’t as popular as it was a few years ago but it is always best to choose home decor that you love, not because it’s in fashion.

Our striped stair carpet is a thing of beauty and I love it so much I had it repaired / patched with offcuts rather than changing it…because there was nothing else I preferred!

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 20/04/2022 12:29

I love our stripey carpet. The rest of our home is decorated quite plainly, so having a 'jazzy' hall, stairs and landing adds some vibrancy through the centre of the house. The carpet hides so much dust, dog hair and fluff too.

We’ve had several stripey stair carpets, all from roger oates, the first one was along time ago, and we moved it from one house to another.
we have moved again recently and we ordered another one 6 months ago which are still waiting for.
they are eye wateringly expensive but worth the money, and look beautiful. I don’t think stripes are out of fashion, but it wouldn’t bother me as I love them.

It doesn't really matter what you have if you like it, we are getting a Timorous Beastie patterned one that no doubt most people will think is very dated but we like it
