Wanstead - how is flight noise

I'm currently living in Islington and looking to move a bit further out in London for bigger space and closer to family. I fell in love with Wanstead but Im aware thats also super popular that I would be in a lot of competition.
I usually visited on a weekend for obvious reason qnd Wanstead is very quiet from my first impression but last thuraday I was shocked by the flight noise. Is it normally very noisy and quite on weekend? Or does it depend on the wind direction?

I wonder if anyone finds the flight noise very loud? or do most people get used to it after a little while?

I lived in Wanstead for 7 years and never noticed any flight noise?

glowingcandle · 16/04/2022 21:11

I also used to live there and don't remember flight noise being an issue.

glowingcandle · 16/04/2022 21:12

It's near a couple of major roads though and some people say you can hear those. Although to be honest I never really noticed that either!

LemonViolet · 16/04/2022 21:12

Worked there for over a decade, lived there on and off for a few years too. Never noticed any flight noise.

Were you next to the A12? Do you mean road noise?

Sortilege · 16/04/2022 21:13

Same here.

Flight noise? Confused

Intemperatefatty · 16/04/2022 21:33

I grew up in Wanstead and my parents still live there. Yeah, flight noise isn’t a thing, not sure what you’re on about. London City airport is miles away.

Hersetta427 · 16/04/2022 21:34

More road noice than plane noise

user1471542018 · 16/04/2022 21:38

Think they’ve recently changed the planes circling for Heathrow so they are going directly over East London so that’s why your hearing it when others didn’t. They are directly over Victoria park too at the moment. You get used to it I suppose, and they rotate them round so it’s not always so noisy but you do get weeks of it every 10-15 mins.

BillyAndTheSillies · 16/04/2022 21:40

We hear the first plane of the day but that's it. And probably only notice it because we are already up with early rising DC.

Sandrine1982 · 16/04/2022 21:46

We are in Leyton and I'm definitely noticing planes being louder compared to North East London where we were before. Is this Heathrow thing temporary or is the flight path over East London a permanent thing? I do find it a bit annoying but I am very sensitive I must say...

Redglitter · 16/04/2022 21:48

I lived on a flight place in my flat for 10 years. Initially it was awful but honestly I very quickly got used to.it & didn't even notice it

Redglitter · 16/04/2022 23:12

*path

Download the Flightradar app and look at it carefully on week days from 7am when the wind is blowing from the west - most of time. I suspect Wanstead is on outbound City flight path.

earsup · 17/04/2022 22:03

often visit friends there...no noise but city airport is currently putting all planes on one flight path at present....southend airport mostly shut until august this year....so wont be that...

UncomfortableSilence · 18/04/2022 07:28

I agree with the poster above about checking Flightradar. We're in Hornchurch, I know it's further out, but City airport changed their routes a few years back and we are directly under their flight path now, if you look at the map it's probably not unreasonable that you would hear noise too.

My mum is in Snaresbrook, right next to Wanstead, and she has definitely noticed it.

UncomfortableSilence · 18/04/2022 07:33

If you Google London City flight path you'll find lots of info.

Thanks so much. I have downloaded the flighttrader app and plan to check of often. I hope as most people living there dont notice the noise, its not really an issue?

My friend lives there and says she very rarely notices them. Pop on Wanstead Community Hub on Facebook and ask if you're worried.

MrsSaltshaker · 18/04/2022 20:42

We lived there until v recently. Flight noise was definitely not an issue.

WorriedMutha · 19/04/2022 07:34

We've spent a lot of time in our Wanstead garden in this fine weather. Yes we can hear planes go over but they are not very frequent and they aren't conversation stoppers. There are some roads where you are more likely to be bothered by the hum of traffic from the A12 but you need to factor that in as you look at individual houses. Spend some time in Wanstead's Green spaces and weigh it up for yourself if you want a general overview.
