Hello

What colour would you paint a north/east facing dining room? One window facing north one east. Prone to being gloomy after morning sun. Flagstones on floor, low beamed ceiling. Dating back to c17th. I have thought about a warm rich navy (I know navy may be on its way out but I’m not too worried about trends) to make it feel cosier as I have read it is better for small rooms to go darker. However would it be too much for an old and modest cottage? For the past decade it has been cream and I have never felt cosy in there. Many thanks

You probably need a darkish jewel tone to make it feel warm - so something like Brinjal or Eating Room Red (F&B) or a dark green. Studio Green (F&B) might be a bit too dark but worth doing a tester.

After painting make sure there’s lots of occasional lighting around and at least one large mirror to reflect light. 😊

Thank you 😊. Off to get my F &B chart out and google them. I have a recently inherited Georgian tallboy and a c17 chest to go in there too so quite dark furniture. I am a lover of lamps so will def have lots of soft lighting and wall sconces too and large mirror. With the dark colours what would you do with woodwork please?

I'd never paint a dark colour on a wall in a north facing room unless you actually want it to feel gloomy.

Our sitting room has windows facing North and East and we have very pale grey walls with deep red velvet curtains. I'm not overly keen but it was DH's choice as it's used mostly by DS with his tech and has DH's musical instruments in it. I generally only go in there to use the printer.

I'd do woodwork same as walls.

Pale pink

I would also paint all woodwork (including doors) the same colour as the walls.

Have a look at Greensmoke (F&B) too. It goes nicely with dark wood furniture.

There was recently a great post on F&B's Instagram page about pain it if north facing rooms with colour suggestions depending on the atmosphere you'd like to create.Iggy be worth having a look.

(I like the sound of brinjal in there though, that could be very cosy with the furniture you describe)
