Building works - quiet periods over nap time

A and B live in terraced properties and share a party wall. B is due to commence an extensive renovation of their property - A has two children aged 2 and 4.

A has requested that the builders stop work every day during nap time - they would like this included in the party wall agreement.

Is this reasonable?

Yes.

GrazingSheep · 13/04/2022 09:48

Is nap time guaranteed to be at the same time every day?

NiceTwin · 13/04/2022 09:50

No, not reasonable.

ifyouturnonthelight · 13/04/2022 09:52

That's not really reasonable though is it ? I mean what if they're in the middle of plastering or doing something time sensitive.

Oh wait we can't do that because next doors children are asleep.. where does that end? Oh we can't do any work between 8-6 because next door are working from home?

Why not just suck it up for however long it may be? Surely asking them to stop for however long your children are asleep for is just prolonging it?

What if they don't go to sleep one day bang on 1pm are you going to go round and demand they stop?

Do they children sleep at the same time? Do they have more than 1 nap a day?

Totally ridiculous

ifyouturnonthelight · 13/04/2022 09:53

Do 4 year olds even nap any more?

LyndaLaHughes · 13/04/2022 09:53

No it's not reasonable I'm afraid.

WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 13/04/2022 09:56

No I don’t think that’s reasonable tbh especially given the ages of the children.

SilverHairedCat · 13/04/2022 09:56

😂😂 No. Not reasonable.

JurasicPerks · 13/04/2022 09:57

Nope. Not reasonable.

NauseousNancy · 13/04/2022 09:57

Totally unreasonable.

FairyCakeWings · 13/04/2022 09:58

No, not at all reasonable.

Especially as it’s unlikely that A has offered to cover the costs of making builders stop work for two hours every day, they are basically expecting their neighbours to pay thousands more in labour costs just to protect nap time.

insancerre · 13/04/2022 09:58

No not reasonable at all

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 13/04/2022 09:59

Only if A is happy to pay the wages of any worker who has to sit around doing nothing in that period.

Sapphirejane · 13/04/2022 09:59

Totally unreasonable and I know how sacrosanct nap time can be. That’s life sometimes.

IcedOatLatte · 13/04/2022 10:00

No, totally unworkable

What are the workmen to do, put their feet up until A sends a signal that the children have woken up.I suspect B thinks A is a carckpot, have they got on intil this point?

DebtheSander · 13/04/2022 10:03

I think the best you could hope for is an acknowledgement of the situation with a commitment to ask the builders to be considerate during those times. If possible. Nothing set in stone nor in writing.

Comefromaway · 13/04/2022 10:05

No, it's not reasonable.

No works before 8am and none after 6pm Mon-Fri would be reasonable.

wonkylegs · 13/04/2022 10:05

Although it would be nice it's not really reasonable. It could be asked but it wouldn't be unreasonable to say no it's not possible.
You cannot control outside influences
I can remember how frustrating it was when one of my DSs was little they did gas replacement works outside my house (with little notice) and it was noisy for weeks not only in the day but often into the evening. It actually annoyed me personally more than it interrupted my sons sleep patterns.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 13/04/2022 10:06

Unreasonable, unworkable, insane.

newbiename · 13/04/2022 10:08

Unreasonable and ridiculous.

cloverleafy · 13/04/2022 10:08

Not reasonable

sunnydaysmiles · 13/04/2022 10:10

Totally ridiculous request

BetterthanIthink · 13/04/2022 10:11

Completely unreasonable.

RandomQuest · 13/04/2022 10:11

Haha WTAF, the party wall agreement is about ensuring there’s no structural damage as a result of the building work, not preserving silence for nap time. A is being ridiculous to even suggest it. Even IF A offered to pay the labour costs to cover nap time as PP’s have mentioned, it would still be massively unreasonable, because it every week it would equate to over a day’s lost labour, resulting in the building work dragging on for way longer than necessary. Given the ages of the children too it’s even more bonkers.

AreWeThereYetMummy · 13/04/2022 10:13

Absolutely not ok. I wouldn't even begin to entertain this craziness if I was the person getting the work done!
