Does anyone know if an old basement with a soil type floor would be a good place to put one a ground source heat pump, or would one have to go outside?

Following as I was wondering about this only yesterday.

A horizontal GSHP for domestic use is installed in a trench around 2m deep, 100+m long. Unless the basement is huge then it’s probably not suitable.

It might be physically possible to install a vertical GSHP, subject to the available headroom and the amount of heat required (these require a borehole around 100m deep), but this would be very expensive for a domestic setting.
