Nice or naff?

Staircase was going to be open and I imagined soft lights every 2nd step would have been a nice feature, but Building Regs have said no to the open staircase and want us to wall it in.

I'm wondering if there's any point to the stair lights now (they would have been low on the wall at the side of every other step).

I personally think they look a bit naff in normal homes, but each to their own.

I was going to opt for neutral sisal throughout the stairs, landing and rooms but after seeing your pic, I'm not so sure! What wood is your staircase made from? I really like your black paint work too - so effective.
