Creaky creaky staircase

What can be done to stop stairs creaking? They are so bad every step reverberates round the house so whoever is first up on the morning wakes everyone up Grin
Can you fix the boards or should I just rip it out and put a new one in?! Any advice?

I think the best way is to put wooden wedges underneath the staircase.

Mine is awful too... every stair creams and I can't sneak up on my children when I know they're up to no good Grin

They don't cream obviously - they creak!

@CellophaneFlower do you mean wedges under each step? I’m not sure how I’d do that…
Honestly I’m at the stage of just wanting it ripped out and rebuilt..but that feels a little drastic (and probably ridiculously expensive) but yes…totally impossible to do any sneaking if any sort in our house 😁 I suppose it might be useful if we have burglars though!

Get a joiner to have a look at it.

Yes... they wedge them in the gaps underneath I think, and it keeps them stable. I think stuff can be done on the exposed stairs, if underneath is inaccessible. Definitely worth getting someone to take a look before you rip it all out though. Just be sure to leave 1 creaky 1 for the burglars Grin
