Crinkly sound from new carpet?

Has anyone experienced a crinkly sound from carpet when you walk on it? We've just had new wool carpet paid, with good underlay, and in certain places the carpet makes a crinkly noise when you walk over it. Almost like walking on carpet that has crisp packets underneath.

Is this because of the underlay used? It's only in certain places, like near the door in two of the rooms.

Also, you can feel that the floor underneath the underlay is uneven in places. Is this something the carpet fitters should have flagged to us during installation? It's not their 'fault' as such, as their job was only to fit the carpet, but I do feel a bit disappointed with the outcome.

Thank you!

Yes ! We’ve got a crinkly crisp packet area too also thick underlay (cloud 9) and wool carpet, it’s fairly small patch but very noticeable. Underneath is where chipboard flooring has been chopped about for heating pipes.

Wtf right? So do you know what it is, and why it exists? Can anything be done?

Afraid I’ve no idea, so I’m hoping someone comes along who does as it’s very random ! Our crinkly patch doesn’t annoy too much so unlikely to do anything about it but curious nonetheless as never experienced before.

We had the same thing. And with Cloud9 underlay. I wonder if it’s maybe where they’ve joined 2 pieces of underlay with a tape that makes crinkly noises.

Ah yes that could well be it. Has your crinkling stopped now ?

I seem to remember that we had it too when one of our carpets was first laid. It turned out a section of the underlay was faulty. Carpet company came back in and replaced underlay.

This is because the top layer of the underlay is rubbing against the carpet. It needs to be refitted. Our carpet installer said rubbing some talcum powder often helps settle gaps between carpet and underlay, and between floorboards.
