Basic drill question

ilkleymoorbartat · 13/03/2022 12:56

Can a hammer drill be used as an all purpose power drill as well? If I wanted to get a drill that can do both (if possible) what would be best ? Thank you!

For all purpose drill including hammer I'd go for a 'combi-drill' but make sure it includes 'hammer' feature

Really helpful thank you @Poshishchap And is that the best option if we don't want to invest in several different types of drill?
Ie, we just need something that will cover the off bit of diy!

A hammer drill means you have the option to use the hammer function on harder materials, there's usually a switch on the drill body. It's invaluable when drilling into brick stone etc.
Get a decent make, they're lighter and more powerful generally

So just search for a hammer drill that has a "switch off" function?

Yes, will drill into wood/brick. It all then depends on budget. But for normal diy use they work well for drilling holes and putting screws in - www.diy.com/departments/tools-equipment/power-tools/drills/combi-drills/DIY637289.cat

Is that different from a combi drill? Realise these are totally basic questions. Sorry!

No need to apologies - A combi drill (that has a hammer function) will mean you'll only need 1 tool. For really heavy drilling into lots of concrete/brick, then a separate mains connected hammer drill or 'SDS' drill is required. But for everyday DIY use - shelves and other DIY projects that involves making holes and joining things together with screws a combi drill is perfect 👍

Thank you so much!

This is a good purchase for domestic works:

Bosch Corded Impact driver UniversalImpact 700

hammer drilling and ordinary drilling, also has adjustable speed for larger drill bits.
