What kind of cabinet for a countertop basin

I'm redoing the bathroom. Its not going well.

Latest disaster is that the bathroom cabinet I've chosen doesnt work with the ridiculously fancy countertop sink, and I dont know what I do need and the workmen arent being all that helpful, just shaking their heads.

  • it needs to come from Amazon (cos I have vouchers, and am skint)
  • it needs to hold a countertop sink
  • it needs to be under £200
  • ideally black, wood would work as well.
  • it needs to arrive asap

Wise mumnetters, can you find anything that would work. I keep searching, but I'm not really sure what I am looking for, except that it cant have a cutout.

What sink do you have? Does it have a tap hole, or do the taps need to stand on the counter top?

I don’t know the proper terminology here. Is a countertop sink the kind where the sink is moulded into the counter? (I have one of those, it shouldn’t be too hard to find a unit.) Or is that a subtype? There are also units with holes cut in the top. Which kind do you have?

What are the measurements of your sink/counter?

I think a countertop sink is like a bowl that sits on top of a unit or floating shelf.

I like the shelf idea a lot. Don’t know how the waste fits into that scenario though.

If that’s no good you could upcycle an old wood cabinet of some sort if desperate, there should be lots in charity furniture shops.

Or try IKEA or b&q (if local to you) so you can pick up right away if time is of the essence.

I think i know what you need, but your not going to find it on Amazon for £200

That is exactly the answer I didnt want to hear!!

Yeah, it sits on top of the cabinet (I've attached a pic of the kind I mean, but I dont always get on well with images on mumsnet) and it only has 1 tap like contraption (only its not a tap, its a "waterfall", told you it was ridiculously fancy).

I need a 600 cabinet, but all the cabinets I point to the plumber is shaking his head at as apparently it wont support the sink. He's also shaking his head at wall mounted things. I didnt think of just having a shelf - that might work.

Change the sink?

Is it too heavy?

Elieza · 04/03/2022 11:27

You need to find out why the plumber says the 600 units you’ve seen are no use.

Only then can you avoid that issue when looking at alternatives.

Cailleachian · 04/03/2022 12:41

I could change the sink, but I love it, and yeah its too heavy, but bathroom cabinets tend to have fairly flimsy tops.

Had a long chat with him after not finding anything suitable. He's going to put a kitchen worktop over the cabinet I have, which isnt ideal, but I really need this bathroom done.

Thanks for all your help!

Great result. That will solve your problem. A slab of worktop or marble or even chunky wood.
