rent - in arrears or forward?

Hi. I always pay rent on 8th and I thought i pay rent forward, but for some reason, landlord sent invoice to pay for another month, as if it is in arrears...what si the standard practice - is rent in arrest or forward?

Strange of the landlord to have it wrong, Can you check all your payments going back?
